Elizabeth sat quietly in the now still rocker, holding her new baby daughter. The feelings she treasured in her heart were just amazing. She couldn’t believe how precious this little person, God had blessed her with was. She smiled down at the sleeping infant, her eye lashes fanned out against her soft baby cheeks. Her perfect rose bud lips still in a pucker from finishing her feeding. Elizabeth listened to her daughter’s gentle breathing and soft new baby sounds. They made up their own little song.
Finally, after soaking up as much of the moment as possible, she put her baby down in her crib. She covered her with her pink crocheted blanket, gently placed a kiss upon her forehead, turned on the baby monitor and padded out of the pastel decorated room.
“Let me guess. She’s been asleep for a good thirty minutes and you just couldn’t take your eyes and arms away from her?” her mom Gloria asked when she found her in the kitchen.
“How’d you know?” Elizabeth smiled, “She’s just amazing Mom. I never imagined loving someone so much. It is so different from anything I’ve ever known.”
Elizabeth joined her mom at the handmade oak table her father had made for her. A glass of fresh lemonade waited for her.
“It shouldn’t be. That is exactly how I felt about you and still do today.” Her mom said with a warm smile and reached her hand across the table to squeeze Elizabeth’s. “Just wait until she’s a toddler running around screaming ‘No, I do it!’ at the top of her lungs. Or when she comes home with a huge school project and tells you about it at the last minute. Or becomes a teenager, oh my, those days you will really need the good Lord. Then one day you’ll start to like her again, not just love her and she’ll go off and break your heart and tell you she’s met someone. And here’s the kicker, ‘He’s the one,’ she’ll tell you. The time is going to fly honey, cherish it. Before you know it, you’ll be visiting her at her house, telling her these things.” There were tears in Gloria’s eyes when she finished.
“Oh Mom,” Elizabeth got up from the table and wrapped her mom in a hug. “Grandma will be here soon to see the baby.”
Elizabeth finished her lemonade and took her glass to the sink, just as the front door opened.
“Mom,” Gloria met her own mom at the door and hugged her.
Gloria’s mother, Isabella hugged her back and whispered, “ Baby of Mine, how are you?” It was what she had always called Gloria in their private moments for as long as she could remember.
“Good Mom.” Gloria helped her mom to a chair. Then she turned to Jake, “Thank you for picking her up.”
“Not a problem. My pleasure. She told me some great stories about Elizabeth. I’m going to head on back to your house and watch the game with Dan.” Jake looked to Elizabeth and she walked him out to the car.
“Thank you for picking up Grandma. I can’t believe we’ve kept it a secret from her.”
“I know I dodged the question quite a bit, so enjoy your girls only time and tell her already,” Jake told her.
Elizabeth smiled, “I love you.”
“I love you more!” Jake said shutting his door, ending the ongoing debate.
Elizabeth returned inside to find her grandma and mom looking at an old photo album, her grandma must have brought. Soft whimpers came over the monitor, so she headed towards the nursery.
“Hi there, I have someone for you to meet sweetheart.”
After a diaper change, Elizabeth carried her 5 day old baby down to meet her Great-Grandma Isabella. She was wrapped all in pink. She smelled so wonderful. Fresh from heaven is what her Mom called it.
“Grandma I have someone for you to meet.” Elizabeth announced as she entered the living room.
Elizabeth’s Grandma smiled and held out her arms, “I’ve been waiting all week to meet this precious one.”
Elizabeth placed her little daughter in her Grandma’s arms and whispered, “This is your Great-Grandma Isabella. You are going to adore her.”
Isabella fell in love with the baby, taking in all her tiny features.
Elizabeth sat down next to her Grandma, “We named her Isabella, after you.”
With tears in her eyes Isabella whispered, “She looks just like you, Baby of Mine.”
