Neither hospitalization, imprisonment nor drug rehabilitation worked to free me from the chains that kept me stuck in a cycle of pain, despair and hopelessness. Nothing worked. Nothing until He touched me – in a hospital – under oxygen. I heard a voice whisper, “pray in my name.” Pushing away the oxygen, I sat up and in a voice hardly audible, spoke the name, ‘Jesus.’ I knew at that moment Someone touched me. I felt the chains falling away. I knew I had been freed. My eyes were opened.
Two weeks later I was released from the hospital. As I walked outside, my eyes drank in the sights and sounds. I stood in awe looking up at the trees, the mountains and the sky. I remember thinking how brilliant in color they were and how their texture appeared like velvet. The darkness I had been accustomed to for so long had been replaced by vivid colors that filled my senses and created joy reverberating through me. How had I never seen the beauty and myriad of colors before? I thought of the words from a well known hymn, ‘once I was blind, but now I see.’
He had opened my eyes and showed me the fullness and richness of the world He created - a world bright and rich in color. In contrast to the darkness I had lived in for so long, I now walk in a world full of brilliant color.
