Then an incident in my life occurred that defied this logic. The deafening shriek of a storm warning split the afternoon sky, a tornado warning had just been issued. My family and I ran down the wooden steps into the dark, dank basement. We huddled together against the cinderblock wall waiting for the storm to pass.
Our pet, miniature poodle, Fluffy, decided it was time to go out. My dad and Fluffy had just reached the top of the stairs, when we heard what sounded like a freight train overhead. The noise was deafening, but it was the rushing winds that shook our house to its very core.
Everyone escaped shaken but unharmed. For the first time, I realized that a force greater than myself controlled my existence.
A short time later as I sat on a paisley cushion under the diamond-paned window, I witnessed an amazing phenomenon. As the light filtered through the rain droplets on the glass, vibrant colors of red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple danced across the wall. I decided Jesus was the Light I needed in my life. He was the only One who could filter out the darkness of sin within me.
I learned that it had never been about what I could do for Him, but rather what His love could do for me. I no longer look at my life from the eyes of that child. Now when I look around, I see all the vibrant colors that radiated around me, on that day long ago.

You had so many words left over--I'd love to have read more about the tornado incident. Consider telling it like a story, with characters and dialog.
