My suitcase was filled not just with clothing and my fan, but also with five hardcover new books. I purchased them at the Library of Congress since they were about Abe Lincoln and I was planning to write a play about his life. As I looked at the bus schedule, I realized I had plenty of time for walking, but not enough money to pay my way for a taxi from the subway to the bus station. I wondered how I would be able to carry the luggage with the extra books.
It was nearing lunch time, and it was only getting hotter. I had finally found my way down a hill before the bus station, and as the road leveled, I could see the bus station’s sign. In my weariness, I stopped at the crosswalk and a man asked if he could help me with my luggage. In my mind, I thought no, because he was a stranger, but my wearied expression stated "OK," and I let go of my suitcase.
I was grateful for his help, and once we arrived at the station, he would not accept money, but when I offered a scripture candy, he said OK. I was thankful to be able to give something to someone who had taken my load.
In the spiritual sense, Christ had invited all to “cast thy burden upon the Lord, and he shall sustain thee (Psalm 55:22 KJV). When I released my suitcase to the gentleman, whom I later learned was also a Christian brother, my strength was regained so I could finish my walk to the bus station. I was thankful for his help and that I could offer him a little mint as a small token of my appreciation. Also, I am eternally grateful for the burden Christ takes away when I trust Him as Lord and Savior. I feel that the praise I offer Him is a small token of the thanks for Him who took my burdensome luggage of anxiety, sin, and doubt.
