In the beginning, there are high hopes and a quiet excitement
That here is someone to share your life with.
Someone to confide in, laugh with, lean on, stick by.
Someone to share trips to the park with,
To chat to as you push swings, walk the dog, take a stroll.
Someone to take on shopping trips,
Company in a restaurant, and at the cinema.
Everything ‘being a friend’ means.
You exchange ideas, opinions
Give advice, take advice, discuss.
Listen to problems, empathise,
Show support. Feel accepted.
Then it starts to go wrong,
Subtle at first - the beginning of the end.
Maybe a misunderstanding, words taken the wrong way.
A decision to take offence,
Perhaps where none was meant.
Resentment sets in, slight at first, but growing.
You feel you are not appreciated, you are being taken for granted
You feel you are in the right. Your friend is in the wrong.
A decision needs to be made at this point:
Honesty and openness
Be brave and bring it up, talk it through.
Or not….Say nothing, paper over the cracks.
A chill sets in,
Unspoken words build up
Dialogue spoken in your head, but not out loud.
Eventually it is too difficult to carry on,
Acting as if everything is ok.
So we let it fade away.
Something that was once so important to us,
We give up, with so little fight.
We bump into each other in a café.
We chat politely, but neither of us suggests meeting up sometime.
The conversation finishes with a ‘Goodbye, see you around’.
This is the End.
When other things end, we give them a name.
Boyfriends and girlfriends ‘split up’.
Husbands and wives ‘get divorced’.
But the end of a friendship has no label.
Just vague generalities muttered about ‘growing apart’.
They give no hint of the trauma involved,
As if it was a mistake to care too much.
New friends come along, afterall.
In Heaven there will be no more sad endings, only new beginnings.
We will be reconciled with those friends we let slip away.
We will have fellowship, with no sin to get in the way and destroy it.
Friendship at its fullest, without end.
