In the beginning… Oh, what does “beginning mean?” Well, let’s see. Once upon a time, a long, long time ago, way before you were even born, before your Mom or Grandma or even her Grandma were ever born- there was nothing! No trees, no grass, no flowers. Not even a sky, or clouds, no puppies or kitties, and no people! Wouldn’t that be sad? If you close your eyes, what do you see? Is it dark? Maybe that’s what it was like before anything in the whole world was here.
Even though there was nothing in the whole world, not even any stars, there was someone there the whole time. Can you tell me who that was? God! Yes, and Jesus, and the Holy Spirit were there with him too. They had lots and lots of time to spend together. What do you think they did? They couldn’t go outside in the summer to have a picnic because there was no sun to make it warm, and no grass to sit on to eat their lunch. They couldn’t even eat because there were no plants to grow food. So what did they do, then? Talk? Yes, big people do like to talk, don’t they!
How would you like to sit and talk to your brother or sister in a dark room all day? No toys to play with, no ball to pass to each other, no books to read, either. It would be too dark to read or play anyway! Would you like that? I would not like that very much. After awhile I would get tired of sitting in the dark and talking to the same person all the time. I would want to talk to other people, and be able to see so I could play too, wouldn’t you? Maybe that’s why God decided to make a Beginning!
Look at your hands. Can you make a giraffe with just your hands? How about a monkey or a zebra or an elephant? Can you draw a picture? No. Not without some paper and a pencil. So how did God make a beginning? He SPOKE! He didn’t even have to use his hands! Wow! Close your eyes again. Before God made a beginning, it was dark. Then He said, “LET THERE BE LIGHT!” And there was light for the FIRST time! Open your eyes now. See? It’s not dark anymore! When God spoke, saying “Let there be light,” (Genesis 1:3) that was the BEGINNING of all the things God made! Did He end there? No.
After light, God made lots more things, just by speaking. He made heaven and earth, water and land, trees, flowers and grass; and it was good. He made the sun, moon and stars in the sky. He made birds, fish and animals, and it was good. Last of all He made people. He created everything with just His voice! Now He had light to see by, beautiful things to look at, and people to talk to and love. He was so happy with His new creation that He said, “It is very good.” (Genesis 1:31) Then do you know what He did? He sighed a big sigh…and He rested.
The end… well actually, it was just the beginning…
