The very first thing, God created was light. See how important that is? It wasn’t something to just round out the overall picture, nope, it was the beginning. Light is described in many ways, but the one I like best is the absence of darkness. Light is so important that even when God separated the light and the dark, he made sure there was still some light. He placed the stars and the moon, which are the promise that the light still exists, that even though it has dimmed for a time, it will be back, and it will be so bright that we can’t even look at it. Light is comfort, is a beacon, and following the light is a step in the right direction to God’s love.
I live in a small rural town. It was my habit to walk my dogs after dark, when my daughters had been tucked into bed. This is something that I have continued, even though my daughters are all grown up. One cool fall evening, I was doing my usual route around the town. It was a moonless night, the air was crisp and the sky was so amazingly clear. Have you ever seen the sky full of so many stars it seems like they are connected to each other, overlapping, blinking over each other, one trying to outshine the other? That’s what this night was like.
Naturally, as I walked a route that was very well known to my feet and to my dogs, I focused on the sky. I probably looked like a fool, staring up as I walked along, but it was beautiful beyond any words. So I began praising. I praised God for his creation, I praised him for the beauty he provided me, I praised him for the quietness of a beautiful night. For almost three miles I praised. Now you must understand, that I’m not one to use big fancy words when it comes to talking to my God. We are very much on a comfortable first name basis. When I see something that is particularly amazing to me I usually pop off with a “Way to go God! You’re awesome!” I like to keep things on a familiar basis with the most powerful being in the world!
My walk was coming to an end, and I thought to myself, “Wouldn’t it be just the most amazing sight to see a shooting star streak across that sky?” I wasn’t asking God to give me that, I just thought that it would be a beautiful ending to my experience. I was already feeling pretty blessed, who was I to ask for more?
I was walking down the alley behind my house, and I had come up even with my own garage. Something made me look back and up, over my shoulder, above my neighbor’s tall tree. Something prompted me to look one more time up at that glimmering, shining velvet sky. Something—wait--Someone made me turn just in time to see a star streaking across the sky.
That night burns in my mind, almost daily. What kind of God is this? Who am I, but one tiny little soul standing on an immense universe, a servant, a single solitary person? I am of absolutely no consequence in the greater scheme of things. But I mattered enough to God, that on one particular night, a simple desire of my heart was granted, and I was wrapped in love. That love, shines, glows and burns as a light, the light that is all we need to escape the darkness. That is the light that will be sufficient to light the world with its very presence. Can you imagine a perfect light like that? I’m sure I can’t do it justice, but I will keep trying every day until I can see it for myself.
1 John 5: …God is light, in him there is no darkness.
