CHANGE OF SEASONS

I remember a few times a year Mom coming to one of us three kids and saying, “I need you to sit on the chair”. Becoming big enough to “sit on the chair” became a rite of passage for us.
Usually Dad would be gone and we knew this signaled a trip to the attic for the taking down and putting up of boxes to be stored until the next season or now ready for the current one. The attic was a crawl space where Dad had laid some planking and was reached through a hatch in their closet. If Dad was involved it meant taking the clothes out of the closet, removing the shoes from the floor, clearing the shelf and getting the ladder in the closet to climb up to the ceiling cover.
Mom’s way involved moving one or two shoes, pushing the hanging clothes to the left and the right, clearing a small space on the shelf in a like manner, then asking or rather telling one of us, “I need you to sit on the chair”. Then a sturdy, straight backed chair was nestled among the shoes, you sat on the chair and Mom stood on the back of the chair to get herself onto the shelf, where she would crouch and slide the hatch open so she could survey the boxes. Moth balled hand me downs would be handed down, or handed up as would things like Christmas decorations or Easter baskets. Most times Mom could reach what she wanted from the shelf but sometimes she would climb all the way into the attic completely disappearing from view.
We all knew this wasn’t the safest way but it was before the days of seat belts in cars, and helmets for bicycle riders. Yet no one voiced this as we knew Mom’s safety was based on our “sitting on the chair” properly. Sometimes we would tease her and tell her we had to go to the bathroom or leave, which would in effect trap her in or half way in the attic. She was at our mercy, but again unspoken we knew her trust in us to guide her foot safely to the back of the chair as she would come down off the shelf and safely to floor. Now it was officially the end of one season and the beginning of a new one.

Delightful insight into the heart of a mom, the difference between how parents do things and the innocent observations of the children. I like your title and the story lives up to its meaning. My only suggestion, to make this a bit easier to read, would be to use some spacing between paragraphs and changes of situations. But overall, a very nice article.
