A deep breath. Removal of all unnecessary clothing items. With my toe I push the on button of the scale. I lift my foot up over the scale. Let’s see, how do I feel? Will it be up or down today? Do I want to know? Wait, what did I eat yesterday? My foot comes down.
Breakfast was, oh yeah, I was good, just an apple (down goes my foot); but then at 10 in the morning, I had two cookies. (Up goes my foot.) It was just two cookies, that’s not bad—oh but I did go back for two more. So, in review, an apple and four cookies, that isn’t that much really. And I skipped lunch! My foot comes down, almost onto the scale.
Oh, but by 3 o’clock, I was starving so I had a pretzel at the mall, a great big soft pretzel just dripping in butter sauce or whatever that is. I’m pretty sure it can’t be that high in calories, right? Pretzels are low fat, aren’t they? I bite my lip. (Foot goes up.)
Then for supper we had, what was it again? Oh why can’t I remember? Pasta! Yes! Pasta is definitely healthy. One plate of spaghetti and a small salad, now that is really healthy. Good for me! (Foot goes down.)
And bread, a couple of pieces of warm, flaky bread with butter, because real butter tastes so much better than margarine. (Foot goes up.) Two pieces of bread. Ok, that’s a little risky, I might have a problem there. Actually, if I’m being honest, it was more than a couple of pieces, more like half the loaf. I just love bread and it was so good.
But I haven’t had anything to eat since supper last night, remember? I
fell asleep in front of the TV watching that crime show. So I didn’t have any snacks after supper. So if it’s up, then it won’t be by too much. (Foot comes down.)
You know, this isn’t the end of the world, it’s just my weight and it’s better to face the truth then to pretend it doesn’t exist. Today is a new day, I will start all over, fruits and vegetables all day. No red meat, no carbs, just healthy, healthy, healthy. Deep breath, I put both feet firmly down on the scale. I wait in suspense as the numbers roll through their digital sequence. An error message flashes. I step down, push the on button again, then step back up. Another error message. Oh…the battery is down.
My weight is a continuous struggle for me. It may go down by as much as five pounds, but that’s how many pounds it will go back up. That is until I started claiming Christ’s power over me. I do not have the power to control my will, but my God, the God whose spirit is within me, does. I am on the way to my goal weight, simply by stopping before I eat and thinking, what is good for my body, not what sounds good to eat. I allow myself to be counseled by the Spirit. I don’t have any ups or downs at my scale anymore, just downs.
“There is only one God; therefore, if food is your god, God cannot be your god. So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” 1 Corinthians 10:31 (NIV)

Clever title, too.
Beautiful twist at the end, to put the focus where it should be.
Thanks.
