Cheering and excitement could be heard reverberating throughout the house. I was 6 years old and my Mom had just announced to my sister and I that tomorrow was Christmas baking day. “Yay! We get to eat cookie dough! Can we help make the cookies? Please?” Mom smiled joyfully at the sight of our contagious enthusiasm. It was our favorite Christmas tradition.

Groans and moans could be heard reverberating throughout the house. I was 15 and my Mom had just announced to my sister and I that tomorrow was Christmas baking day. “Awwww, Mom… Can’t we just go to Grandma’s house and eat HER cookies?” I didn’t notice the tears that crept into the corners of Mom’s eyes, because I was too busy shutting myself in my room with further snide remarks.
Mom, now sniffling, knocked on my door. “But, honey, we do this every year. It’s tradition! You have always loved it. Don’t you want to eat the dough? You know you can’t eat cookie dough unless we do the Christmas baking.”

Cheering and excitement could be heard reverberating throughout the house. My kids were 5 and 6 years old and I had just announced that tomorrow was Christmas baking day. “Yay! We get to eat cookie dough! Can we help? Please?” I laughed contentedly and thanked the Lord for my Mom, who had initiated the tradition so many years ago. “Oh yes, you can help, kids. We are going to have so much fun!”
Then I whispered under my breath, “And I’m going to enjoy it while it lasts… Which I pray will be for a long, long time.” With that, I picked up the phone to call my Mom to say a heartfelt “thank you” for giving me such wonderful memories of childhood and to let her know that her prayers for me over the years were not in vain.
Thanks, Mom!

I could really relate to your MC, as my two daughters seem to be growing up so quickly... it really is bittersweet.
