As she leaned against the door, Kimmy closed her eyes and relished the feel of the cool door against her warm skin. The temperatures soared into the nineties even before noon, now it had to be at least one hundred degrees.
The weather had been the last thing on her mind when Kimmy took her triplets to the backyard. At three years they were mobile enough to keep her chasing them each waking hour of the day - what one wasn’t into the other was- and their new favorite pastime was fighting.
The hitting, kicking, biting and screaming made her want to leave and the only cure she had found for this behavior was to take them outside where they seemingly forgot the others existed.
Today the weather was more miserable than listening to the three of them fight and they had quickly moved back indoors for the air conditioning. Kimmy was beginning to think that God was rolling a pair of dice to decide her fate. After years of infertility she became pregnant and thought she was starting the journey she had always wanted, but rather than one child to hold, cuddle and love she received three that whined, fought and disobeyed constantly. She was not enjoying motherhood.
Kimmy heard the faint screaming of Kylie, her only girl, and sighed. Respite over, she rushed toward the sound of her children - who by this time were all screaming.
Rather than finding the turmoil she expected she found her three toddlers in the hallway, bouncing their little rubber ball and watching it in glee as it ricocheted wildly about.
Kylie and Caleb jumped and clapped screaming, “More! More!” Cody hurled it back into action, which brought more cheers.
“Mama!" Caleb squealed in delight. “Thanks for letting us play nutso-ball!”
“Nutso-ball?” Kimmy questioned, amused with their creativity.
“Yeah!” Cody chimed in. “It don’t hurt it though. It was meant for bouncing!”
Kimmy grinned at her children and the stress of the afternoon faded, replaced with love. As she watched them play, she contemplated her earlier reaction to the path God had chosen for her. Perhaps He wasn’t rolling the dice after all; maybe He was playing nutso-ball. She watched the delight in her children’s eyes and promised herself that she would remember those faces the next time she was so frustrated with her situation.
As Cody said, “It don’t hurt, it was meant for bouncing!” and she knew that even though her life was not meant for bouncing, it was made for living and that was what she would do. Live her life, screaming kids and all, each moment for the delight of her Father in heaven.
