Topic: Charade (08/14/08)
Bobby checks his watch for the umpteenth time since his last soda break. “Will quitting time ever come?” Hearing the final buzzer of the day, he drops his clipboard on his manager’s desk and is the first to clock out.

Racing to his new red, Toyota pickup, only one thing is on his mind, Joe’s wild bash tonight.

Bobby is a young 22-year-old, who describes himself as the “life of the party.” He always has lots of money in his pockets and spends it freely on all the people around him. If you can ignore the foul things that sometimes come out of his mouth, he is quite cool.

Because he is the first to arrive at the parties and the last to leave, he struggles to get out of bed for work the next day.

Robert pulls into his driveway on Wednesday evening, checks his watch to see how much time he has before church begins. Walking into his studio apartment, he thinks about who will be at the services. In his bedroom, he takes his freshly, pressed pants and new, maroon shirt and carefully places them on the perfectly made bed. Robert is now showered, shaved, and dressed. Gazing into the mirror one last time, he grabs his Bible off the hall table and walks out the door.

Robert is a very dedicated 22-year-old young man. He is faithful and a perfect role model for the teens at his local church, where he has been a member for 10 years. On Sunday and Wednesday, you will find him in the same spot… third pew, aisle seat.

Wow! Here’s two totally different young men. One is “living it up” in the world, and the other seems to be a wonderful young Christian.

The sad thing is….. they are the same person seen through different eyes.

If we live our lives for God in front of God’s people, that is what they see. If we live like the world in front of worldly people, then, that is what they will see. Everyone’s perception is their reality.

The problem is God’s perception is the true reality. What He sees is a two-faced individual. My wise Grandpa would have said, “They were straddling the fence.”

If we are honest with ourselves, we have been a Bobby/Robert person at some time in our lives.

We must strive to live our lives so that everyone sees us living for God in our daily walk, not just on Sunday. Life is hard, but we have to remember we are being watched by others. Their perception is their reality.

Good job contrasting the two aspects of Bobby/Robert.

A note: "Who's" means "who is" or "who has". I think you wanted "Whose" in your title.

This would be a great devotional for a young men's teen discussion.

This is something I would like my teenaged son to read. You did a great job of showing the reality of so many Christians - being one way to one group of people and another to those at church. Good job!
