In 1 Corinthians 13:11b KJV Paul said, “When I became a man, I put away childish things.” Since I grew up most of the childhood games I played are long since behind me. No way could these old bones climb into a fallen tree top and make it into a pirate ship, no matter how big a ditch it lay over: and I’m much too slow for a game of chase or softball. But there is one game that I seem to play more frequently as I age, Hide and Seek. The game has changed in that I no longer need playmates to hide from me since inanimate objects have taken over that role.

The first thing every morning I play Hide and Seek with my glasses. This is the most difficult game of the day since I can’t see well enough without my glasses to find my glasses. So, I bump around the room feeling over all the places I might have left them until my fingers find the familiar touch of frame or lens. Often my husband will join the fun and help me find them before my patience wears out. At intervals throughout the rest of the day I will search for a pen, a spice bottle, the book I just put down and many other items. Sometimes an item will hide in plain sight until someone, usually my husband, points to it and says, “Is this what you are looking for?” This would be hard to take except that he has items using the same tricks that I have to find for him.

At times God seems to join the game. I can seek Him in prayer but can’t seem to find Him. I know He is close by because He told me so in His word. But I don’t feel His presence or hear His voice for awhile and frustration rises as I get more intentional and fervent in the search. I guess God doesn’t appreciate being ignored and taken for granted so He will let me pull away until I realize my loss and get serious about seeking Him again. Thankfully He has promised us “…seek and you will find.” (Matthew 7:7 KJV) When I begin to seriously seek God through His word, His church, or His creation I soon find myself back in His loving presence and that’s the best place to end a game of Hide and Seek.
