The big silver plane came out of the western sky, dropping low over the Mediterranean Sea; coming even lower over a strip of coastline and finally settling onto the tarmac of the Tel Aviv, Israel International Airport.
The group of Americans emerging from the plane had come to the sixty year old nation of Israel to deal with their twenty-first century frustrations and seek answers here where three faiths claimed one spot as their beginning. If God had hid a special message here, this group intended to find its roots.
Among stones, cisterns, caves, mountains and seas, this group searched diligently for the truths hidden in this land where Jews, Christians and Moslems have sacrificed their lives for ownership.
Some say the Garden of Eden was here also. Others seek for Sodom and Gomorrah, believing a great catastrophe wiped these cities from the face of the earth. Some seek for a city called Salem hidden in the layers of rock beneath Jerusalem where a priest/king, after the order of Melchizedek, once ruled. Those interested in locating these missing cities must play ‘hide and seek’ deep within their imaginations.
Masada stands on the Dead Sea, hiding her ghostly tales from those seeking to unravel them. Young Israel gives forth the promise: She Shall Not Fall Again.
The Essenes hid the scrolls so completely at Qumran it took more than 2000 years for them to be found. Hide and seek had not been their intention. Preservation of these ancient texts had been their motivation.
In the Golan Heights, north of the Sea of Galilee, pagan temples and Christian symbols have been unearthed near each other, while weapons of modern warfare occupy the area. Hide and seek is still a game in the Jezreel Valley where the final battle of Armageddon is prophesized to be fought.
The group probed Mount Carmel, Caesarea, Bethlehem, Herodiuim, and the Temple Mount in Jerusalem with all its hidden mysteries, the Garden Tomb, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre on Golgotha’s sacred spot, the site of the Last Supper and Hezekiah’s ancient tunnel.
Jerusalem’s modern museum revealed many truths as did the Holocaust Museum. The Knesset, Israel’s Parliament building, stood silently in the sun, testifying to one group’s struggle to repossess the land, while the temple with its golden dome spoke of another group’s claim.
It seems “hide and seek” is the destiny of this land. Two thousand years from now, another group will arrive here to seek out the God whose roots are buried in this small strip of land.
Will this group arrive by rocket ship from the moon or will they come from colonies of new beginnings on the face of planet earth?
