It started out just a couple of cans and a string
Before long, nearly every house had that familiar ring
This amazing invention became the main communication
Across the world, in every nation
On the other end could be friend or foe
The news it bears could make you high or bring you low
It makes the world a smaller place
Hearing a voice is almost as good as seeing a face
We learn of babies being born
Sadly to say, there’s even porn
We get news of death and grieving
Those who are coming home and those who are leaving
A world could change with just one call
‘Drop the bomb; kill them all’
A president is dead
Shot in the head
The final vote is cast
We have the answer at last
Now buy, now sell
Peace has come; all is well
We can use it to curse or praise
We can use it to shatter someone’s life or to make someone’s days
Now we can use it to take pictures and play songs
There must be a million different rings and gongs
Now you can even text on a cell phone
So no one has to feel alone
But there is one thing it cannot do
There’s no direct line to heaven; a call can’t get through
God remains the same
In prayer we can call on His name
We don’t have to worry that He has another call
He has time to hear one and all
