Her fourth move in one year. She smiled as another new adventure began.
Another new town. It came with its perks: going out without makeup, with pajamas on, hair a hideous sight to see. No worries of running into a single soul who would know her, see what a mess she looked, or even remotely care to pay her any attention.
But maybe that was the problem. Life had gotten quite lonely during this series of short term stepping stones in her life. Sure, the kids didn't mind as long as there was a park nearby-but she wondered if she'd ever feel the security or stability that was supposed to accompany a place to live..a true feeling she was home.
Of all the places, she felt the most on edge here. Near a big city, a little run down and a far cry from the land of plush shopping centers, gi-nourmous SUVs, and mega-churches on every corner that now seemed a world and a half away.
What if she was to be here for a long time? What if they would soon turn around and move AGAIN! Her world seemed to be a never ending series of marital and financial crises leading to endless stress-inducing "what if.." scenarios? Where was she to put her trust amidst this sea of question marks in her mind?
Slowly, she realized she had to take a mental journey. It wasn't to a place in her past, but to the memory of someone she'd met. She had to go way back 10 years when she'd first gotten to know him. She remembered how he made her feel...the beloved security she was now desperately longing for.
He'd promised she could depend on him. He'd said, "Just stick with me and I will never lead you in the wrong direction." In fact, he had even pledged to never ever leave her side-no matter where she lived, how much time she spent with him and no matter how many times she hurt his feelings. He'd even written a whole book of love letters to help guide her and give her the strength she needed each day.
In the messiness of life, of moving from house to house, she had forgotten all these promises. In all the books, talk radio, sermon podcasts and music talking about him, she'd somehow become disconnected from this knight in shining armor that had swept her off her feet those years before.
She now knew the location of her dot on the map was irrelevant.
When she finally opened her heart to him again, they laughed at how painfully obvious the truth had been all along: It didn't matter if they had to pick up and move to a new city every other month-her heart and her family's true home, true safe haven was with him.
For never leaving my forgetful, distracted, self-centered heart- Jesus, I am eternally grateful.
