I took one look at it, and wanted to run away! This dilapidated, run down, outdated, sorry excuse for a house was going to be our new home; the place where I would be living with my parents, and younger sister, Linda and brother, Bill; my inner sanctum, my bonding nest? I thought to myself that surely we had the wrong address, that we had turned left, instead of turning right at the junction in the road. After all, we had meandered through many country roads on the way to our new farm, and Dad must have made a wrong turn somewhere along the way!
The yard was overgrown with weeds taller than any I had ever seen, as I had not been exposed to such wilds, while living in our comfortable suburban home with the manicured lawn, white picket fence, "American Dream", perfect family home, that was now so many miles behind us.
I had to ask myself again, "Now, just why did Mom and Dad have to jerk us out of our comfortable way of life to bring us to these wild and untamed hollers of West Virginia?"
Dad had talked for years of returning to his boyhood state of West Virginia, when he retired from his twenty years of service with The United States Army; but I never took it too seriously, as we were comfortably situated in the deep south where we sat and ate such delights as Southern fried chicken, watermelon, and drank sweetened ice tea in the back yard while we listened to the stock car races....pure Heaven!
But, then the day came; he retired and he followed through with his yearning desire to buy a farm where we were to raise cattle, sheep, chickens, and gosh knows whatever else that was considered to be country critters.
All, I could think of was, that this new dwelling was a dollar short and a day late of being any place that I wanted to call home.
Mom grabbed me by the hand, and told me to go inside the house, but I was intent on not going inside. At that time, a pickup truck pulled up, and a handsome young fellow jumped out, and said, "Welcome to West Virginia! I am one of the sons of your new neighbors". I stared at his dreamy brown eyes, and long lashes, his curly brown hair, his nicely tanned, and well muscled, farm worked body, and my heart fluttered!
As, he climbed back into his truck, he turned to me, gave me a wink, and said, "Nice to have you as our new neighbor!"
I turned to Mom, and said, "Well, what are waiting for? Isn't this our new family home? Let's go inside!
This home was surely worth a second look!
