The following Sunday, I noticed an elderly couple visiting our church. During visiting time I worked my way to the back to welcome them.
Hi” I said, extending my hand in greeting, “I’m so glad you decided to visit our church today.” She took my hand into hers.
“Thank you dear, my name is Margie and this is my husband Bob”, she said.
“My name is Candace; it’s a pleasure to meet you both.” I said, as I took Bobs outstretched hand.
“Bob is deaf and mute“, Margie said, “but he reads lips.”
“Oh, I‘m sorry. “ I said awkwardly.
“Oh its ok, he has been this way since birth.”
They both smiled with their eyes, radiating a love for God and his people. You could just feel it somehow. I nodded and welcomed them again to our church.
As summer wore on, I began to notice the boys had stopped complaining of being bored. The woods behind our house had become their new playground.
I also noticed at church that the boys were always sitting with Bob and Margie now. At dinner time I decided to ask them why they sat with the elderly couple every Sunday.
“Uncle Bob’s the coolest mom!” Jonathan said.
“Yea!” said Steven.
“He’s going to teach me to build a rabbit trap next week. They live right behind our house through the woods.” informed Jonathan.
“And Aunt Margie bakes us cookies” Steven chimed.
“Uncle Bob and Aunt Margie?” I asked in surprise.
“That‘s what they told us to call them.” said Jonathan
“ So that’s what you’ve been doing in the woods all summer?” I asked.
Mr. Bob meets us at the creek every day and teaches us something new.“ Jonathan said, with anticipation in his voice.
How could a mute and deaf man teach my kids? It seemed to be working though, and I sure wasn’t going to miss an opportunity for my boys to have a male role model. After all, it was just like God to use the most unlikely people to fulfill his glory.
The following Sunday, I made sure to thank Bob for the time he spent with the boys. He just nodded his head and smiled. “The boys are such a joy to have around,” replied Margie. “I’m very grateful.” I said with a smile.
Each evening at the dinner table was filled with wonderful stories they had done with Uncle Bob.
Summer vacation ended. The boys no longer played in the woods. I wanted to show my appreciation for all Uncle Bob and Aunt Margie had done, so I baked a loaf of fresh bread and started through the woods. My first view of the back of the house looked dilapidated. The grass was half dead and grown up in weeds. The front of the house was even more shocking. A ‘FOR SALE’ sign was stuck in the yard. There were no curtains, so I looked in through the window. It was empty! Had they moved? Just then a car pulled into the drive. A professional looking lady got out, “Can I help you?” She asked. “I did not realize the owners had moved.” I said. She looked at me strangely, with a slight shake of her head. “I’m sorry but this house has been empty for 2 years,” she said.
“No, No it hasn’t,” I laughed nervously. She frowned at me questionably, “I’ve been showing this house to all summer; no one has lived here. “Maybe you’ve got the wrong house.” She suggested. Confused I could only nod and head back home.
I Inquired throughout the week, no one seemed to know where Bob and Margie had gone. The boys shrugged and said they new Uncle Bob and Aunt Margie were leaving, and nothing more was said. The mystery of their disappearance was never solved.
My devotional one morning was the story of Abraham and the angels that appeared to him. Could God have sent angels in disguise to be an Uncle and Aunt to Jarred and Steven?”
I suddenly felt chills running up and down my arms and I thanked God for answered prayer.
