Previous Challenge Entry (Level 1 – Beginner)
Topic: Father (as in paternal parent, not God) (04/10/08)
A long, exaggerated sigh drifted from the depths of the room, and she shut the door. Another daily battle and she was tired. What happened to the sweet little boy she once knew? Fourteen became the magic number and it seemed he suddenly turned into a typical teenager overnight where everything she said and did seemed to embarrass him.

“Problem?” asked her husband as she walked into the living room. He knew their personalities were exactly alike and the clashes were nothing new.

“Well, the bright side is you can no longer say he’s a ‘mama’s boy’”. With her own exaggerated sigh, she forced a smile and sank into the recliner. “Maybe you can take a turn later to check on him and make sure his homework is done.”

She heard a faint “uh huh” as she watched her husband change the channels with lightening speed as the screen remained a colorful blur to her. It never ceased to amaze her how he could possibly tell what was on TV that way. Her mind drifted as she silently prayed. With a grateful heart, she thanked the Lord that her son was connecting with his father more now. Her mind added to the checklist; he was learning a good work ethic helping his dad work outdoors in the summer; his savings account was growing; and he even now wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps and go into the military. She leaned her head back on the soft cushion and closed her eyes to the opening song of “American Idol”.

She was glad her son wanted to be more like his dad now and was drawing close to him. She knew her husband’s mentorship was even more critical during these teen years so he could grow to be a man of faith. Vague concerns about the coming years whirled around her head, but she was resolute in remaining a strong prayer warrior and was assured that the Lord's guidance and protection would continue to surround them. If her son turned out to be half the man his father was, then she will feel richly blessed indeed. As she walked into the kitchen to wash the dishes, she wryly thought, “Now, if I could just keep from embarrassing him I’ll be doing really well!”

“Mom, I finished my homework. Could you read my book report and proof it for me?”

I love how she turns it all over to God. Very nice descriptions too. I felt like I knew her and her family.

"This too shall pass". It really will. Just keep being a mom and don't ever let up. My son will soon be 18, going off to college and is leaning more on me these days, all the while leaping forward with his life. It's awesome. Your writing was interesting and you manage to capture the moment of frustration with your words. It made me breath deeply. Nicely done.

Love the values the mother has for her children. I would love to see some more colorful wording. Really hits home and encourages me with my own teenage boy.
