Previous Challenge Entry (Level 1 – Beginner)
Topic: Illustrate the meaning of "Make Hay While the Sun Shines" (without using the actual phrase or literal example). (03/06/08)
“Bartholomew, you heard what we were told to do. We should gather as much food as we can close to the wall, then get in before the you-know-what comes after us.”

“Who made you the boss, Penelope? I don’t even believe there is such a being. It’s just a story our parents made up to scare us so we wouldn’t wander too far from home. You’re too much of a worry-wart. That’s what you are. Have you ever seen this BIG SCARY CREATURE?

“I’m doing what our parents told us. I’m warning the younger kids because I can remember my grandfather. He got caught and had to live without part of his tail for the rest of his life. Just because you haven’t seen something doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. Maybe you should just decide to come with us and do what you’re supposed to.”

“You’re not my conscience, Penelope. I believe there is more food out there across the wide open spaces. It’s probably better food, too. I plan to go exploring. I bet I’ll come back with more food than anybody. Anyone want to come with me? Just think about it – more food than you can carry back. You’ll be so full you won’t be able to eat for a week. Who wants to come with me? No one? All right. I’m off on an exciting adventure. You’ll all be sorry when I come back and you find out I’m right. See you!”

With the exception of Bartholomew, they spread out along the wall, collecting as much food as they could as quickly as possible. Suddenly, the alarm rang out.

“CAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT”

In a frantic frenzy, the tiny mice scattered, scurrying to the safety of their own little hiding places. All but Bartholomew. Alas, poor Bartholomew learned too late that the large gray cat was indeed real.

This is cute--consider expanding it with more action in addition to the dialogue.

Is there some unique twist you can give this to make it stand out from the typical mouse-and-cat tale?

Poor Bartholomew. I thought these were kids talking at first. You fooled me, although it certainly doesn't take much to do that! LOL! Keep on writing!

This was a fun read, although I am admittedly biased toward cat stories, as my own entry this week falls in this cat-egory. I like how you concealed the species of creatures until the end.
