His name was Alec Bradley Jones but his friends called him ‘A B Baby’ he had always been on fire for God and had a deep desire to become a minister.
At the time of this event he had been assigned to work with me in ministry as an assistant pastor. I knew that he was very talented and I was more than glad to have been given opportunity to contribute to his training. A B was a great learner, showing terrific promise. During his time with me in ministry A B went on leave to South Africa.
On his return he seemed excited about a certain girl he had met. Her name was Sarah, how appropriate for our A B, and at their meeting they had already discussed the possibility of a union in marriage.
Yes A B believed it was time for him to get married. After all, he was more than 20 years old and getting ready to become a fulltime minister, but this romance was very short lived. It couldn’t survive the correspondence age.
Jokingly my wife and I asked him what he wanted for his 21st birthday and he said, “A blonde”. In the best tradition of the song “Paper Doll”, we gave him a Barbie doll with hair dyed green. He blushed and wiped his glasses.
When A B was embarrassed he would continually wipe his glasses. I think they must have misted up.
I had almost forgotten these ambitions and was about to write a glowing recommendation to the committee on his behalf. Sitting in my study contemplating the wording of my report I was interrupted by a timid knock on the door.
“Come in!” I called.
To my surprise there stood A B, glasses and hanky in hand looking very embarrassed.
“What’s the matter A B?” I asked.
“I’m in real trouble.” He blurted out, “It’s very serious.”
“Why A B? What’s happened?”
“ I’ve written proposals of marriage to three girls at the same time. What do I do if all three accept?”
I hid my smile and replied very seriously, “You can’t marry all three, at least two would sue you for breach of promise. I don’t think that you can withdraw the offers now, they probably will not get the fresh letters before they accept.”
“That’s why I’ve come to you” he said, “Couldn’t you just pray that two say no and one says yes?”
“Don’t you think that could be the sort of prayer to satisfy your own desires? No A B! If you ask me to pray, I’m afraid it’s all or none. I will pray that all refuse you in fairness to the girls.”
(By now you will have realized that I was rubbing it in. A B had almost rubbed the lenses out of his glasses, continually putting them on and taking them off.)
He agreed to my terms and our prayers were answered.
A B learned that there would be a right time to propose. I also sent in my report as planned, not mentioning this incident, although I’ve laughed often since about ‘A B’s Dilemma’.
Early in his ministry he met a lovely nurse while reading the scriptures to a lady in intensive care, That lady was miraculously healed (I might tell you about it some other time) but A B married the nurse and they are still together in the ministry today.
I’ve shared this incident with them and A B rubbed his glasses again while his beautiful wife just laughed.
