Bob could not believe it. He did not want to believe it.
The night was cold and dark. So very dark. The darkness probably had more to do with Bob’s soul than the actual conditions outside his beat up ’88 Chevy. He had been sent on many investigations before. It was usually the same old stuff. Boyfriend cheating on girlfriend, or girlfriend cheating on boyfriend. Occasionally it was husband and wife cheating. Those were always harder to deal with. Having lost his own wife several years ago Bob could never understand why someone would want to cheat on their spouse. He always really thought that if they knew what it would be like to lose the other person, they would behave themselves in a more reasonable manner.
This case was still different, even from those. What Bob saw in his binoculars made his skin crawl and his stomach churn. The fast food burger he swallowed practically whole about an hour ago was threatening to come back up.
Bob’s heart was beating louder. He had no idea how he was going to be able to go over the information he had gathered tonight with the gentleman that had hired him to spy on his wife. Mr. Robert Sinclair was such a nice, respectable gentleman. When he first approached Bob to follow his wife it came as a total shock. Bob honestly thought the older man was joking. He wasn’t joking though, and now Bob had the proof as to why Mr. Sinclair should have been so worried. His client would never believe who his wife had been seeing.
Anger set in as the shock wore off. He knew he should only tell the person who hired him, no one else. That would be very difficult in this particular case, although it usually was no problem. Bob had to remind himself that God would deal with both of the guilty parties in this affair, and that it was not up to him to bring judgment. He would just take the picture and report to Mr. Sinclair what he had observed, just as he would for any client.
Bob held up his camera to get the photo he would give Mr. Sinclair. There, in the viewfinder, was Mr. Sinclair’s wife, and Pastor Willis—the pastor of the church they all attended who had just preached Sunday on faithfulness.
