Day is Done

One of these days, I might be able to sleep, but today is not that day. I’m still sitting at my computer after midnight. My heart pounds as I search for answers on the Internet, but answers to what? I know I am saved by the blood of Jesus Christ, but I have to live here and now in the meantime. My house is a mess, the kids are asleep, and I hear the bellowing snores of my beloved husband echoing through the heater register. I can’t tell if the dog is staring at me because he needs to go out, or if he is trying to figure out which one of us is passing gas. I know I worked hard today in the corporate world of past-paced data management moving thousands of dollars I will never see between data fields for reports, but was it enough?

I decide to check my email. Again. So what wisdom and wit was my wise Aunt Carla sending through cyberspace to my email account? Her emails are always good. My eyes linger on her quote:

“Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; begin it well and serenely and with too high a spirit
to be cumbered with your old nonsense.” Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882)

I take these words to heart, and realize only God can help me let this day be done.

Dear Lord in Heaven, I confess that I have fallen short of the picture of perfection I have drawn for myself, and far short of Your glory. Help me to be a good mother and wife, a good contributor to my corporation’s bottom line. Help me to let this day end so I can sleep. I know all this worrying is not helping anything. I don’t seem to be able to let it go, so I pray for willingness to let You help me. Help me to get to sleep, and to know that today is done. Help me to claim your mercies that are new every morning, even tomorrow morning. Goodnight and amen.

This is a nice little devotional. It sounds just like my house, late at night, when I can't sleep -- right up to the gas! Well, maybe past that part, too:) I also love the Emerson quote. Thank you for sharing that. Never read it before. Keep on writing!
