I prayed God would open a door for me to write full-time. One big break was all I needed, I thought. The demands of daily living granted little time to write. Sold on the belief that all would be well if I could only barricade myself in an A-frame in the Smoky Mountains, I grew depressed. I wanted to become a prolific Christian writer, soak in God’s creation, and bless the hearts of millions of readers. I spent more time staring out the window, dreaming of a Smoky Mountain cottage, than writing to bless the hearts of my readers.
Okay – time to wake up, turn off the alarm clock, throw on my flip-flops, walk the dog, and get a shower. That morning, it came to me. Without daily interaction, as troubling life can be sometimes, what would I write? Foregoing human interaction, what archetypical characters could I create? Without trial and triumph, victory and defeat, what substance would my thoughts have? If I was always on the mountain, could I really write about valleys?
Too busy for morning devotional, the truck became my prayer closet. As I careened down one street then another, the world looked different. This was my world; as a writer, the Lord wanted me here to convey a message. God’s will for my life was simple. Moreover, it did not include a mountaintop A-frame haven or a million dollars.
That morning in the truck, I learned to pray without condition. Conditions create confusion. “Lord, lead me. Let me encounter people, places, and things for your glory. Give me the words for the stories you want me to tell. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
The Lord wanted me to remain a member of the working world and write too. The confusion was my creation. There was never any doubt in His mind concerning His will for my life. As for being a full-time writer, well, I cannot recall a time when I was not full-time in serving the Lord. A gentle tap from God let me know; I am already about my Father’s business.
As a Christian writer, I am to be content wherever the Lord leads. I thank Him for two hands, typing skills, a sound mind, a heart for service, feet to reach others, trees for oxygen and making paper, a working computer, the Internet, citizenship in a country that allows me to read God’s word, and peace that passes all understanding. God loves me without condition; it is my duty to love and serve Him in kind.
