“Mommy, up.” Sierra came toddling into my bedroom, climbed up on my bed and sat looking at me.
Not wanting to get up yet, I didn’t move.
Sierra started bouncing and singing. I recognized the tune, but could only understand an occasional word.
“Sierra, please stop bouncing.”
“Mommy, up.”
I opened one eye and noticed the light just barely coming in the window. Glancing at the clock, I realized it was only 5:57 AM. My little girl seemed to get up so early each day.
Closing my eyes, I hugged the covers tighter. Whatever she had in mind could wait a little longer.
“Mommy…” I felt little fingers on my right eyelid, lifting it ever so gently.
“Sierra, Mommy’s tired.” I removed the tiny hand from my face and again closed my eyes.
“Mommy, up!”
Toddlers can be so demanding and persistent when they want to be.
I guess she wasn’t getting the hint and I wasn’t going to be getting any more sleep.
Sighing, I flipped back the covers. Sierra grabbed the covers and pulled them further from my body. I felt their warmth escaping.
Making one last attempt to remain in bed just a little longer, I grabbed Sierra in one hand and the fleeing covers in the other. I pulled them both towards me and snuggled into my pillow.
Sierra giggled. I guess she knew she’d won.
“Mommy up now?”
This time both eyelids were sliding up with little fingers. She was so close I could feel her warm breath on my cheek.
“Why do I need to get up so early, Sierra?”
Her answer made me laugh. “Nummies.”
“Oh, so you’re hungry, are you?”
A quick smile lit her face and tight little blonde curls bounced as she nodded. She slid down off the bed and walked hesitantly toward the door. When she was almost at the hallway, she turned.
I had to smile. Who could resist this little one wearing the pink teddy bear pyjamas?
“What do you want for breakfast today?”
“Awfuls.”
I lifted my head off the pillow and looked more closely at her. She was smiling.
“Awfuls?” Was she telling me how badly my cooking tasted?
“Nummy awfuls.”
Okay, she wanted something that was yummy and awful, or did she mean awful yummy?
“What sort of awfuls would you like?”
“Beberry.” Sierra smiled sweetly at me. “Wif sup.”
I desperately wanted to understand my daughter. She was doing her best to communicate with me. It was up to me to figure out her two-year-old vocabulary.
“Beberry awfuls?”
Sierra’s eyes sparkled and her curls bobbed as she clapped her hands and jumped up and down.
“Beberry awfuls with sup?”
I laughed as her words finally made sense to me. “Okay, breakfast will be blueberry waffles with syrup for you.”
I shuffled towards the door, grabbing my robe and stuffing my feet into my slippers on the way.
“Uyik too?”.
“What did you say, Honey?”
“Uyik too?”
Uyik? That was definitely not a word I’d heard her use before.
I squatted down and put my face right in front of hers. I searched her bright blue eyes for the answer. Maybe I hadn’t heard her correctly.
“I don’t understand, Sweetie. Can you say it one more time for me?”
“Uyik.”
She said it clearly enough, yet I still didn’t understand her any better.
“Can you show me what you want?”
The light of understanding finally came on as Sierra wiggled her little hips.
I pulled her close and hugged her tight.
“Sure, we can put on some music while you eat your blueberry waffles with syrup.
