"Did you see poor old Mr. George at church Sunday?" Mattie asked her
friends. She twisted her face into a repulive mass of wrinkles, "He wears the same
suit every service. One would think he'd know better, after all he is been our druggist
for years." Mattie's husband had already made his journey into heaven.
"It's such a shame," Marie butted in. "He is a good looking man when he is cleaned
up." She turned her nose to heaven and her eyes rolled back in her head. She'd never
married.
"That happens when the wife dies," Betty chimed in. "A man goes to pot when a
woman's not around to tell him what to do." Betty knew everything. If you asked her,
she'd tell you. Her husband fished a lot. In fact, he lived at their lake home most
of the week.
"Have you heard the latest?" Sue whispered to the ladies stitching on a quilt to
be raffled off at the Senior Citizen's Harvest Festival.
The five heads looked up, each whispered, "no-o-o-o."
"Carla told me a young girl comes to his house and spends the night," she informed
the group. "She said the girl drives his dead wife's car!"
"Is Carla Mr. George,s neigbhor?" Mattie asked.
"Yes," Sue spoke sharply, "and she knows!"
"I knew there was something wrong with that man the first time I laid eyes on him."
Linda put her needle down and pointed her old crooked finger to the center of the nine-
patch she was working on. "His wife worked like dog and this is the thanks she gets!"
Linda was marrierd to a retired lawyer who wrote every day in the privacy of his home
office.
"I'll tell you," Ruth interrupted, "she should have divorced him before she died."
The angry woman jerked her head back and forth, "That would have shown him!"
Ruth was a divorcee.
The sound of a phone ringing turned the six ladies heads to Sue's purse.
"Hello," Sue's husky voice roared into the reciever. "Really, what happened?"
The five ladies sat on the edge of their chairs waiting a report.
"Where did they take him? . . . I see. . . . The girl is there? . . . Of all the nerve!
. . . Okay . . . when I leave here, I'll drop by the hospital." Sue addressed her friends,
"That was Carla. Mr. George has been taken to the hospital."
"And the girl is there?" Linda ask.
"Yes, doesn't that beat all?" Sue showed outrage. "I'm going over there after I leave
here. I'll find out what she is doing there!"
"Let us know?" the five ladies agreed.
"I will!!!

Sue walked to the nurses' station. "Which room is Mr. George Hall in?" she demanded
loudly.
A caring smile swept over the Charge Nurse, "I'm so glad your here. Mr. Hall's niece is
very upset."
"Niece?"
"Yes, she's George's only relative."
The noisy lady felt her knees buckle; she grabbed the counter and held it in a death
grasp until she'd gained control over her mind and body.
"Oh, here comes Tonya now." The Nurse was pleased, "Tonya, here is someone to see
your Uncle."
"Oh I'm so glad," Tonya took hold of the old woman and gave her a hug, "My Uncle had
a heart attack and they won't let me see him," she sobbed.
"My husband and I've known your Uncle for years," Sue was overheard telling
Tonya as the two walked toward the waiting room.
Sue, soon found time to call Linda, Mattie, Betty, Marie, and Ruth.

"No Mattie, it is my week to do Mr. George's laundry," Marie demanded, "Now give
it to me! This is your week to shop for him."
"No, remember, Betty and Ruth are cleaning, Sue and Linda are cooking right?"
Mattie stopped the argument.
"You're right," Marie remembered. She confirmed with a smile. The smile
smoothed the deep wrinkles in her face, leaving a soft radiant glow.
