I was peering over the shoulder of my master and was glad I was not his point of reference, for in this moment in time, I had to look thru the green fog of his vile breath in order to see the face of the man on one knee before him. The words that I heard were all too familiar, as he wooed his prey with demonic and yet, precise verbal comfort.
“It feels so good, doesn’t it?”
“Yes, master but…”
“Silence! Do not cloud the air with logic and goodness. It is well with your soul, or should I say, our soul, my child.”
As I was watching, I could tell that what I saw was not the same as his loyal subject.
From where I stood his body was covered with the shedding of old scales, his spine protruded from thin reptilian flesh; his fingers were tapered almost to points with nails of stainless steel covered in fresh blood. But, from where the man knelt, he observed his own face as in a mirror, evil was not detected, and kindness filled his ears with approval.
“What will happen to me now, my liege, since you hold the land that I once possessed?”
“Nothing, darkness said, for I shall leave you alone once again to take pleasure in that which you desire.”
At those words the man rose to his feet, bent low at the waist, and backed out from his presence. My emplacement was made known to him, as he let me become aware of his thoughts.
“I know that you are behind me, son of the light, but you are flickering. Do you miss me?”
A soft emotional response enveloped my being momentarily, and then it was gone. Guilt swiftly took its place, but I held back any comment. Anger came next followed with a quenching that was like water thrown on hot embers. Within its steam I saw a vague reflection of my own life.
“That man could have been me,” I muttered softly.
“What makes you think it’s not,” the question was raised. “You do know that whatever art form you conceive, destiny shall follow. It’s all in the brushstroke of the spiritually you use, isn’t it?”
