A strength to hold you when you fall.
Her heart so big you can’t imagine,
for she forgives again and again....
Christmas seems like a time that is past.
Thanks giving, Easter, and birthdays, all feel like something
I can’t ever touch again. These were times that brought
so much joy. Giving gifts that meant everything, just to show
all the love that you could not express with words.
Walking up to the door, knowing that once it opened you
would be engulfed in the smells of the season.
Turkey, pie and cookies all placed on the counter tops with
the mashed potatoes, turnips and jell-O.
Decorations adorning the mantle and the door ways, inviting
smiles and conversation. Shutters click and flashes flash, so
that one day, all you have are the slightly skewed memories,
and the pretty little pictures to remind you of the fun you once
had, year after year.
Then it stops.
Your memories that were tucked away in your heart, now begin
to surface often, and you try to sort them in your mind.
Nothing that you want to forget, but knowing that it hurts so
much to remember. The sorted thoughts, you try to shelve
them in their many boxes, so that you hopefully have some
control over when and where you open them, but you don’t.
Often you find yourself crying, unaware that you have opened
one of your gifts from the past. Then you see them starring at
you, and your face turns to a pale shade of red.
You smile at the people who barely existed three minutes ago.
Knowing that the only way to recover from your, slight embarrassment,
is to laugh and pretend that things are fine...
Every year I would pick out something to give her, and she would
do the same for me. This year though, I will not be getting those
socks that I am sure she found "special" for me. That became my
favorite gift. One thing that we shared that noone else had.
Her and me. Not just my parent, my best best friend. I have a few
more firsts coming with the loss of my mom, and Christmas will be the
biggest. No stuffed turkey with mashed potatoes and gravy. No turnip, or
jell-o with green onions and carrot. This year I will miss her cookies,
and pop corn balls. Most of all though, I will miss her. I am thankful for
the memories and all the photos, but I think I am most thankful that
she was the one that was mine, and I am the one that was hers...
thank you mom...
