WHAT WOULD JESUS DO? (REALLY)

I get a grainy "1950's" picture of how things USED to be.

Starched white uniforms with caps and an elderly gentleman in a lab coat with some contraption around his head, with what appeared to be a big silver thing sticking out of the middle of it.

Of course that's the "layman's term".

In technical terms it was a "SCARY contraption with a big silver thing".

I had no doubt that, with this implement, the wearer had the abililty to see you without your CLOTHES on, sort of like those glasses that you saw advertized in your Superman Comic Book, but with the additional benefit of being backed by the American Medical Association.

THAT was 1950...This is 2006.

Times change...things change.

The television has brought stuff into our lives that can make you feel like you are in an actual operating room, complete with blood.

I blame M*A*S*H for this. Don't get me wrong. I love M*A*S*H, but I remember when it wasn't so "uncomfortable" to watch a medical drama.

Does anybody remember "Doctor KILDARE"? (I thought so.)

Real life is starting to get scary too.

My wife is a HOSPICE nurse. Ya know what she gets to do on the job? She gets to massage the stumps of her amputee patients. She gets to give people who could be her father, or brother or classmate, enemas. What do you TALK about at a time like that? How do you make a person that you went to school with, comfortable about the INTIMCY that you have to broach, and then come home and cook dinner for your husband.

GOD BLESS them.

THERE, I've said it.

I want to shout from every housetop that I think that the medical profession is worth EVERY penny we pay them. In fact, I don't think that we pay them enough.

I am a salesman.

I get paid a ridiculous amount of money to sell people things that they really don't need. I often make more than my wife. What a shame.

You know what's REALLY a shame though?

The greatest healer of all time walked in our midst and we never even really knew Him. In fact...We decided to kill Him.

Tomorrow is Veteran's Day and in this country, we have a LOT of men and women who are coming back to us shattered in their bodies and their spirits.

They're going to need a gentle touch.

What Would Jesus Do?

I liked your entry, both funny and thoughtful. Having just gone through time with hospice in my own family, I can certainly say amen to your comments.

This is almost a clinical prognosis of a serious situation. In not too many words you have said quite a lot. Can we ever thank the doctors, nurses and veterans enough?

As usual - Right on the mark! I swear I'm reading the late Lewis Grizzard's ghost writer. Always something to think about after reading one of your pieces. Great job, Pauly, as always. So down to earth, so true, so...how can I put this? Ah.. so ultra, so exceptional and so "telling it like it is "Really" type stuff. Loved it! Don't stay away so long!

"What do you TALK about at a time like that?" Well, you learn to see these essential interactions as teaching opportunities! You explain what you need to do, what the patient can expect, etc. In other words, a nurse at times like this is "clinical" and professional. And, that helps to distract the patient and reduce the embarrassment.
