Baby of mine
Sent from heaven above
I hold you and rock you today
Baby of mine
I give all of my love
Even time cannot take you away
Her mind ran back in time to her own little white rocking chair and the baby girl that she cradled through long sleepless nights while she sang this tune. She remembered bad dreams, scraped knees, and teasing boys that brought her daughter back to her arms through the years and warranted another chorus of the song.
She remembered crooning the tune in attentive little ears as she kissed away frightened tears on the first day of kindergarten. It was this song that got the child through the disappointments of spelling bee losses and the nervousness of piano recitals.
As the song continued on the other side of the door, the memory of a young lady in a blue taffeta prom dress came into her head. She remembered humming the melody quietly to herself as she waited beneath the stairs while her only daughter ran to open the door and introduce them to her date.
Then there was that lonely night in August when she sat on that little girl’s bed and hugged her pink lace pillow while she sang her song for no one to hear. The little girl wasn’t little any more. She had waved goodbye that morning as they drove away and left her at the university.
It was the song that this mother heard in her head while all of their family and friends listened to “The Wedding March”. She sang it in her heart as she watched the beautiful woman glide down an aisle on her proud father’s arm dressed in a white satin gown.

Maybe the song was all in her head now. Maybe memories are strongest on the special days when you know you are creating new ones. Maybe it was time to finally let go and realize that time has a mind of its own.
She creaked open the door and peeked in. There in a hospital gown sat her baby, exhausted and exuberant, cradling a baby of her own. And sure enough the song was real. The beautiful voice stopped and the smiling face turned to her and handed her a bundle of blankets and a small pink infant, and mother and daughter sang their song together for a new generation and knew for sure that time goes on, but so does a song.
