I can still hear the pleasant arrangements of musical notes as I think back to times that I sat on my grandfather’s lap.
The succession of notes formed a distinctive sequence that became my most treasured melody
He always played the same record, never boring; instead it became our theme song.
Those notes still dance in my head each time I reminisce because for us it meant it was story time!
Little did I know that my grandfather was very purposeful and lovingly wise.
I thought he was just grandpa.
“Tell me about the dead man again grandpa!”
“Now Casey, I think once is enough, don’t you?”
“But I want to hear it again so I can remember it good. I wanna tell Will tomorrow.”
“Have you ever tried to say it in your own words? Maybe it would be easer that way.”
“But what if I leave something out? Would it still work?”
“I’ll tell you what, what if I pretend that I’m your friend and you can practice on me.”
“Hey, that would be cool grandpa! Can I start now?”
“Go for it Casey, at my age I’ll take all the time I can get!”
“Ok, here it goes. Their once was this outlaw see, and all the good guys in the town were
after him.
When they found him, everybody was scared because they didn’t know what
was going to happen.
They were real surprised because there was no fighting.
They didn’t find a weapon on him so they took him to jail.
Then the town tried to have the sheriff kill him, but they had to wait for a trial… how am I doing grandpa?”
“Fine son, go on, your getten’ to the good part.”
“Anyway, he didn’t try to break out or anything.
Some folks thought he wasn’t so tough now!
People started to riot and yell and scream and… I guess it got crazy for a while!
They started to horse whip him and…”
Casey stretched and let out a big yawn.
“What was the guys name again, Grandpa?”
His Grandpa whispered gently while as he stroked the child’s head.
“Jesus, Casey.”
“Oh yeah, that’s right. He doesn’t make such a good outlaw grandpa, does he?”
I drifted off with our song playing in the background.
The melody of “Jesus Loves Me” still rings in my head and puts me to rest.
