“Don’t watch,” I tell myself as patchy fog sways around the parched field crouching in the foxholes and leaping over the mounded debris of battle.
“Ignore it,” I order myself when the black smoke and gunpowder assault my nostrils, burn my eyes and spread panic in their footsteps.
“Hide in the shadows,” I say as black shapes march back and forth, making gains, losing ground, settling for second best.
“Don’t listen,” I whisper to myself as under a starless sky my ears ring with echoes of questions screamed and shouted commands. Impossibly, sobs reverberate and victory yells drift across the desolate landscape, evidence of battles won and lost.
“Pain cries out,” I say.
“Bitter death is silent,” comes my response.
My flesh flees, my mind closes and my emotions gush open; light recedes into darkness. In surrender, my body falls to its knees.
Admitting my helplessness, I pray. Miraculously, when the God in me
cries out to the God of the cross, the heavens speak thunder, the earth shakes and the veil in the temple of my heart is torn. Across the battlefield of my soul, the Light of the World comes bringing gentleness and peace, safety and security. By His blood I am saved. Not only am I forgiven of my sins, but also our Father in heaven covers me with the cloak of His righteousness and His Spirit comes to live in my body, in my mind, in me.
Yes, my soul is a battleground where God and evil contend but when I communicate with God, I am more than a conqueror. I am, mystery of mysteries, a child of God and a joint heir with Jesus Christ.
