The workroom was silent. Around a few stones listened to see what would happen. Most were comfortable in their wombs built of lies and sin, though some wondered what was beyond their walls. Across the room, a door swung open and the gleaming Master stepped through. He rushed over to the stone, scooping it up in his arms. Gently He began to speak to it.
“I remember when I first created you. You were shining and beautiful and full of life and joy. But no sooner had you started your existence than you turned away from Me, hardening yourself against My voice. I tried to woo you back with gifts, but you thought those were only what you deserved. Then I tried to break through your shell with pain, but you responded with more layers of rock. All this time I’ve stood and called to you, chipping away at your hardened surface, though you ran and would not answer me. Today, today will be different.”
The soul was afraid. The voice speaking to him sounded familiar, like those thoughts that he had ignored telling him right from wrong. Now, would this same presence he had dismissed for all those years set him free?
The Master carefully set the stone down on the workbench. He picked up his hammer and chisel and began to gently tap at the stone’s exterior. A small sliver fell away and the soul stirred. At last, a little room to breath! The Master tapped again, and a large crack ran straight through the rock into the small cavity where the soul dwelt. Light flooded the tiny chamber, and the soul squinted his eyes against it. He was frightened, but somehow a sense of rightness and peace flooded his being. The Master picked the cracked stone up and carried it to the sink. Looking down, the soul saw through the crack that the sink was full of blood.
“You’re not going to put me in that!” the soul cried.
The Master paused. “It’s the only thing powerful enough to set you free. Once I wash you, all these layers of sin you’ve built up will be gone, and you will able to be with Me forever.”
The soul pondered this. On one hand, he knew what to expect in his miserable prison. But something about the Master felt right. “Please, set me free.”
The Master dipped the stone into the blood. The layers of rock fell away and left only the soul, shining and clean. He took a deep breath and stepped out into freedom.
