He looks down at her, and while she screams and thrashes with agony, he can’t stop thinking about how much he loves her. She has been in so much pain for so long, and he doesn’t know how much more he can take. He knows she can take more. She has always been stronger than him. But this might just be too much. He hurts because she hurts and he sheds tears because she is sobbing. So much pain. So much hurt.

Is this really worth it? No one should have to go through so much. What hurts him the most is the realization that this is the easy part. So many difficulties and struggles lie in the road ahead, and this moment of pain pales in comparison to what those moments will surely be like. He never thought it would be like this. He loves her so much.

She looks up at him, and while she sees her pain reflected in his eyes and face, she can’t stop thinking about how much she loves him. He has sacrificed so much. He has given up so much for her, for this. She can’t stand to see him cry, and it only makes her sob even more. Through all of the pain and suffering, he has always been there, and he has been so strong. He has always been stronger than her.

This is so hard for her. She has never felt pain so intense and so real. Is this worth it? As she looks at him she realizes that things will only get harder for him. The times ahead will surely be filled with more worry, more grief, more heartache, and more tears. She slowly realizes that this is the easy part. Easy has never felt so impossible.

Slowly the doctor rises from the foot of the bed. He cuts the umbilical cord, and hands the new baby girl to her mother. Tears of pain turn to tears of joy. Dad comes around to the side of the bed and kneels down so he can look into the eyes of the most beautiful girl he has ever seen. He is instantly smitten.

“Hello Joy”, her mother says. “You are so worth it.”
