This is what John 14:15-18 means to me. Firstly, Christ says, “If you love Me, keep My commandments.” Which commandments is He referring to? Christ did say to love God with all your hearts and to love your neighbor as yourself. However, Christ was also God so it must also mean the Ten Commandments. We cannot divorce the Son from the Father. Whatever the Father said, the Son also agrees with. How many of us during the last week have not sinned in word or thought or deed? How many of us continue to break God’s commandments regularly? The degree to which we do this, is indicates the degree to which we are filled with the Holy Spirit. That is why Christ prefaces his next statement with this verse.

Secondly, he says he will pray for us. He does not abandon us. He refers to another Helper that will stay within us forever. That Helper is referred to as the Spirit of truth, which we know as the Holy Spirit. We become indwelt with the Spirit from the moment we receive Christ, but as mentioned not everyone is equally filled with the Spirit at all times.

Next Christ says the world cannot receive Him, does not see Him, and does not know Him. That is because He only dwells in us as believers. Finally Christ says He will not leave us as orphans; that He will come to us. What a wonderful promise! Not only does He give us the Spirit, but He also promises to come back to us.

In my experience as a Christian, I find sometimes there are dry times in my life. The burdens of life bear down so hard, I do not feel like having my morning devotions. But through it all, I can still cling to the promises of Christ. Through fellowship with other Christians and the Spirit touching my heart, I return. And when I do, Christ speaks to me again through the Holy Spirit as I read the Word of God afresh in the morning.

Prayer: Lord, thank you so much for your indescribable gifts. They are new every morning. Thank you so much for the gift of your Son, your only Son. And thank you ever so much for the gift of the Spirit of Truth. We would be in a lot of trouble without It. Amen.
