believe it is! We all know what selfishness is. It is the pursuit of my interests and advancing myself above others wants and needs. In this light, selfishness is a destructive thing.
Selfishness, however, can be seen in a good light. We have a beautiful daughter who, like her brothers, is intelligent and gifted. She was happy and sweet. While in junior high something happened to her that was traumatic for her. In a matter of months, she turned from this sweet loveable teen to an angry, frustrated young lady. Something was greatly wrong. We did all we could do to get her the help she needed, but to no avail. We were stymied at every juncture. It would be “her” way or no way. We were horrified to see our daughter give up on life and begin to live destructively.
Her Biblical upbringing did nothing for her. She began to hate us, church,
her good friends whom she replaced with rebellious ones. She was on the road to destruction. We couldn’t stop her as any attempts made her hate us
more.
Several years passed and, at 22, she was caught selling and using drugs.
It was during this time, that she gave birth to our granddaughter. She was
a reward of our daughter’s selfishness. At 23, our daughter had to go to federal prison for 15 months. Her selfishness afforded us the opportunity to love and care for her daughter. We poured into her like we did her mother. We taught, sang, and kept Jesus alive in her little life. We also kept her mother alive in her little mind. We visited our daughter several times in federal prison. Mother and daughter became reacquainted, and love started
from a tiny seed and began to bloom into a beautiful garden bed of flowers for both.
During these difficult times, we constantly prayed selfishly for our daughter to return to the Lord Jesus Christ. To become the woman that God wanted her to be, to be the mother that her little girl needed, and for us to relinquish our little granddaughter back to her mother. We selfishly prayed for God to build a bond between mother and daughter, and to lessen the bond between grandmother and granddaughter so that the transition could successfully be made. This was miraculously accomplished! My daughter and her daughter, my granddaughter, are beautifully bonded as it should be. I was selfishly rewarded for my faith in God’s working in my daughter’s life and heart. There was a time when I had lost my daughter, but now I can say, selfishly, I have her back! She once was lost, but now has been found. She was in the rough rock, stuck, bleeding, and almost dead, but God in His infinite love and mercy, restored her to Himself, to her daughter and us. This is selfishness rewarded!
