It amazes me that ordinary men, in ordinary circumstances, did something amazing. Their amazing feat was to spread the word of God and the good news of Jesus throughout the known world.
Of course what was amazing was the absolute hostile environment that was present at the time; yet these men were able to lay the foundation of Christianity. They did it with a little help from Jesus. It was his words and deeds that caused people to believe. It was his love that gave people hope. When people have hope they have all they need.
The same could be said for modern times. Today in Iraq, brave soldiers from many nations are giving the Iraqi people hope. They are helping the Iraqis build a free and open society. How do I know? I was there not long ago.
Last year was my second tour in Iraq. I spent the year traveling through out the Al Anbar province as an inspector. I was inspecting a site in Ramadi, when the insurgents attacked. In my desperation, during a rocket attack, I heard the words of the Lord anew. It was as if I were hearing them for the first time.
“I can do everything through him who gives me strength.”—Philippians 4:13 (NIV)
As the rockets fell and the mortars rained, I knew that He would give me the strength to make it through that night. With His help I survived that night and my tour.
I’m not saying that what I did that night was particularly extraordinary, but He gave me the strength to make a small difference. It was not in His plan to take me yet. I still have work to do.
