TITLE: Forgiveness in Time | Previous Challenge Entry

Hubert had always thought that it was his girlfriends who had ended their relationships--they were the ones who pushed him away. Not the other way around! Maybe it was the mid-life crisis talking, but when Hubert had gone through his back catalogue of memories, he had started to see that the common denominator in every broken relationship had been him.
For some reason he had the idea that he could not promise his heart away and love someone for any length of time. So it had come to this--sitting in a time machine preparing to repair the hearts he had broken throughout his life.
Being a man of science, Hubert had many opportunities available to him to access new technological methods and materials. His company had been commissioned by the Government to construct a prototype ‘time traveling portal’ for use with the missing person’s unit. Although Hubert knew that it was a bit 'naughty,' and a bit risky, this was an opportunity that no-one could refuse! Who wouldn’t want to be able to settle all those unsolved mysteries and myths, and see the great ruins of the world when they were still in one piece!
Before leaving, Hubert had pinpointed the one relationship which had left him feeling shattered--despite the fact that he had been the one to end it. Hubert had actually wanted this one to work out. He had even gone so far as to become engaged--that is, before he got cold feet.
After her, Hubert had never felt so stupid in his whole life. He had finally realized that he needed closure. He needed to be forgiven, which was why he was traveling back to 1979 to stop himself from making a mess of things.
Shouldn’t be a problem, he thought to himself. I’ve seen enough ‘Back to the Future’ movies to know what to do!
Stepping out of the machine’s cabin, Hubert suddenly realized that he had no plan and was, in fact, way over his head. Feeling very lightheaded and struggling to breathe, he tried desperately to think of what to do. He couldn’t go up to either his ex-fiancée or himself--that would be just too dangerous. He had to come up with something clever.
Why oh why didn’t I think this all through before I left? he thought.
“That’s it!” Hubert exclaimed suddenly, “I need to leave letters for both of us, explaining why I broke things off. It’s because I never think things through properly. Hopefully, young me will realize the mistake I’ve made and my darling and I will live a happy and contented life forever!”
Delighted with his plan, Hubert began to write.
Once the two letters had been delivered, Hubert decided that his work was done and he could go home--certain that he would be blissfully happy with his wife. Now his life would be really worth something!
After hopping back into the time machine, Hubert closed his eyes and relaxed, ready to enjoy the trip.
Arriving home, however, the scene he had prepared himself for was not exactly the one that greeted him. He found himself in a hospital, standing over his wife--his darling--as she lay dying from an incurable disease.
Walking slowly towards her, Hubert felt his eyes brimming with tears. He gently picked up her hand and as she looked at his face, she could see that his heart was broken, and all hope was gone.
“I didn’t think it would turn out this way,” Hubert sobbed. “We were meant to be happy.”
Struggling to speak, his darling gripped his hand and whispered into his ear, before closing her eyes for the last time.
Walking out of the ward, Hubert felt a strange mixture of closure and love as he walked into the hospital’s chapel. For his wife had known all along the secret to happiness--true forgiveness and love comes only from the Lord.
