The problem was that Scared rarely got to go anywhere alone. Helpless almost always tagged along. When ever she went with Scared, they usually buried so deep into the fern patch that it became a dark cavern that shut out the world completely and they tried to pretend they didn’t exist. They could do that easily when they were together.
Sometimes Scared would actually venture out, leaving Helpless home, and instead letting Anxiety come along instead. Anxiety would at least try things that Helpless never would. They would go places together and sometimes meet up with some acquaintances they knew, Hope and Strength. Hope and Strength were exciting and made them forget about all the things that made life so unbearable. Strength was quiet and determined, and Hope made the world light up with her smile and her dreams of what life could be like if Scared could get a break.
About the time that Scared would think she might get her break, Defeat and Failure always showed up bullying Scared into fleeing once again. It would take Anxiety a long time to catch up, because once Scared started running, she ran with amazing speed until her tears overtook her and she collapsed behind a tree or bush and sobbed and begged to be allowed to die. Anxiety hated it when Scared behaved this way, because she was inconsolable and Anxiety never knew what to do.
One day, after Scared had grown up, she looked around and realized that she still had nothing to live for and probably never would. She laid in the dark that night and cried out to Hope’s God and asked him why she had never had a break. She told him how much she hated herself and that she knew she was exactly what Defeat and Failure had always made her out to be, and for that she was sorry. Scared didn’t have a reason to think that anyone would hear her groaning.
As she wept, she began to feel a whispered breath. She thought that maybe Helpless had snuck in on her, but as she looked around, she realized that she was still alone. Or thought she was. She could still feel the whispering breath and after sitting silently, she began to hear the whispers instead of just feel them. “Daughter, please look to me, come to me, listen to me”. She dared to raise her eyes, and realized that she needed to see with her heart, not her eyes. Her eyes saw the darkness, her heart however, saw something, someone she couldn’t find words to describe. He was begging her to come to him, asking if he could hold her and comfort her. She had never done anything without Helpless or Anxiety before, but found that she couldn’t resist this tender voice or those gentle arms.
Suddenly, with out knowing why she did it, Scared just ran and jumped into the arms that waited for her. She shuddered and sobbed and as she did, the arms that held her tight seemed to give her a peace in her soul she hadn’t known that she could have. Then, as she quieted, she heard these words, “Daughter, oh my precious child, when you cried out and asked why you never had a break, I had to come to you. To tell you that the most important break, was in MY heart while I waited for you to seek me. You see, you had to be broken and at the end of you, in order to need me. And while I watched you suffer, I cried every tear with you. Hope and Strength have talked of you often . They’ve been wanting to bring you home to meet me, but said you were always afraid of the bullies. Well, they can’t harm you anymore… I have adopted you into my family, which means you will have a home and a new name. Even though it is a long one, it shall be….Broken and Spilled Out”.
