A cornerstone, or capstone, is a stone laid in the intersection between two adjacent walls. It is very important, indispensable, in masonry, and it’s easy to understand why. Two walls could not be joined without an appropriate cornerstone. It was so fundamental in classical architecture, in fact, that the word cornerstone has become synonymous with foundation.

Only with this understanding can we understand what Jesus meant when quoting Psalm 118:22, “The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.” Jesus, whom the people had rejected, was the fundamental foundation used in building their salvation. Jesus follows this by saying, “Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces.” (Luke 20:18)

Now, the phrase “fall on” does not necessarily mean a literal plummet—it can also mean attack. With this understanding, Jesus could be saying that everyone who attacks the cornerstone will be broken to pieces. That would mean, therefore, that anyone who opposes Jesus will be broken.

My point is this: Do not go against the will of Christ. Jesus has all of God’s power behind Him. Whoever opposes the Son will have to face the Father. If any one of us goes against what we know to be the will of Jesus Christ, we will be punished by our Father in Heaven. We will lose blessings and opportunities: By rejecting Jesus’ will, we reject all the good things he seeks to give to us. As Moses said, obedience will lead you to be “blessed when you go in, and blessed when you go out.” But disobedience will lead you to be “cursed when you go in, and cursed when you go out.”

Be careful, my brothers and sisters. Consult Jesus in all you do: Pray to him before taking any action, so that you may be sure that you are in His will. If you act outside of His will and forsake Him, you will be broken. I tell you this not so the Lord will be portrayed as a wrathful and cruel being, for that is not what I am saying. The Lord is just and kind. But you cannot fight a rock without getting hurt. There is an old Jewish proverb that states, “If the stone falls on the pot, alas for the pot; if the pot falls on the stone, alas for the pot!” You cannot oppose Jesus without being broken. There’s simply no other outcome.

No, I tell you this so that you will be watchful and mindful. Be careful that you do not strike against a rock and break yourself. Be very careful not to go against Jesus. Keep your mind on Him so that you will not find yourself falling on Him. If that happens, you will break, I assure you.

So therefore keep your faith strong and your eyes always on the cornerstone that is Jesus Christ. Keep your mind always on Him, so that Satan will never wedge you into a position where you will be shattered. I tell you, if it happens, it will be difficult to rebuild yourself.
