“Somewhere in outer space, God has prepared a place”, sang Natalie as she walked into the kitchen.
“I remember that song”, we used to teach it to the kids in Sunday school chirped mum cheerfully.
“Yes but mum, is it actually in space or is it another dimension or will there be a new earth?” Michelle asked. “I mean, where is heaven really? Is it an actual physical space or is it a state of being or what?”
Mum paused as she washed her hands.
“Well, I’m not sure really. I guess it’s like trying to figure out what it means when we read in God’s word that the Kingdom of God is at hand. Does it mean a geographical kingdom, the condition of your heart, the Lord being in control or a combination of all that?”
Dad walked in and soon a lively discussion, followed. It wasn’t too long before everyone was contemplating what the Kingdom of God really means. Even the four younger kids had some thoughts. “Well, what about the Kingdom of Narnia? That Kingdom was reined by an evil white witch, but it was symbolic of God’s Kingdom, wasn’t it?”
“Well, why don’t we see what we can find in the Bible,” said Dad in his own pragmatic way as he reached to open it. But before he could get a word in, the children were coming out with their own thoughts on relevant bible verses.
“What about where it says seek first the Kingdom of God? Doesn’t it talk about righteousness going hand in hand with it?”
“Well if you ask me,” announced Natalie, the Kingdom of God is where the first shall be last and the last shall be first, and all is redeemed by Grace.”
“Well that could sort of mean the Kingdom is in our hearts. If Jesus is Lord and we’re doing what He says, He reins.” Michelle pondered out aloud.
“Then that would mean Heaven is in our heart,” added mum.
“Doesn’t the Bible say in Genesis that in the beginning God made the Heavens and the Earth?” Sam queried.
“It does, I learned that at bible study this week,” said Sarah emphatically.
“Then Heaven must be in outer space and that’s where God’s Kingdom is!” Kristen exclaimed excitedly.
“Well, I learned in Kids Church on Sunday that Jesus said the kingdom of heaven belongs to us little children,” said little Abbi, who always found it hard to get a word in, “so if it belongs to me, does that mean it’s upstairs in my room with my other belongings or is it inside of me?”
Every one paused waiting intently for Dad to answer.
