I’m so glad I was raised before television became the main source of entertainment. We were too poor to have a television, so the library was our source of entertainment. Weekly trips to the library to view an educational movie, an entertaining movie, and a browse through the books was a highlight of my life each week. Selecting 3-4 books to take home provided entertainment when my chores were done. They were treasures to enjoy at my own speed.
The great thing about books was that, unlike tv, I could pause and resume as I wished. If it was a particularly enjoyable book, I could pause it often to savor the details of the story. There was no rush to get it finished. And, best of all, I could reread it as I had the opportunity.
Even used comic books, that we could get for a dime, were worth reading. Save ten of them and turn them back in for a free comic book. Oh yes, the local used bookstore, with its dark stacks, musty smell, and treasures waiting to be found, got to know our family. We may have been poor, but we were not bored. Just 8-9 blocks from our house was Churchill’s Booklover’s Haunt. A definite favorite place for my family. Who knows what mysteries could be found if we had the courage to explore the back shelves or even venture upstairs?
If I were rich, you would find me often in Barnes and Noble, or some such book haunt. They are so awesome. So much information to learn. So many stories to entertain. So many people to learn about and share in their lives.
