Home…rare evenings when I can stay home and curl up with a new book or even catch up on chores.
Home…the place I feel secure.
Home…the place I share with husband and two dogs.
Home…where I can look and live as I please.
This is home as I know it now. It wasn’t always so. I grew up in a preacher’s family with five kids, all girls. I am the middle. In the fifties and sixties, preachers moved around a lot. At least in the area I grew up. We moved to seven different churches in four different states by the time I graduated high school.
So my definition of home is not a place where I always lived in the same house, with the same friends, on the same street. Was it awful? Not to me, but to some of my sisters it was agony. Making friends was dicey because it was hard work to make new friends, only to leave them in a year or two. Some of my sisters thought it wasn’t worth it. I took a different view. I needed friends and it was totally worth the risk of leaving them. I always got involved in school activities as if I were going to always be at that particular school. Sure, I cried and acted as if the world was going to end because I had to leave. I would cry and carry on until the car was out of town and then I was anticipating what the next school would be like.
I was fortunate to finish all three years of high school in the same town. I made close friends, some I still am in contact with years later. I left in September for college and my Dad took a different church in a different state in October. I have never been back to the town I graduated high school. Do I regret it? Not at all. Was God training me for my adult life? You betcha! You see, I have lived all over the country with my husband. I have the ability to move to a new town, find a new church, and fit in. Do I ever want to settle down and stay in one place? Maybe. My kids say we have to in the next few years. They want us closed to them. I want to be closer and I know we will eventually have to settle – but I bet after a few months in one place I will definitely have to learn to be content there. Such is life!
