Matthew became involved in the church. Everyone adored him, but Anna thought he was too good to be true. Others had come into the church pretending to be men of God. Unsuspecting women had found out the hard way that their princes were really frogs.
After being asked several times, Anna finally agreed to go out on a date with Matthew. However, Anna determined she would not let her guard down.
Two months and several dates later, she changed her mind.
“I really like him Deena,” she told her best friend.
A year later, Matthew asked Anna to marry him. She quickly shared the news with her family, pastor, and close friends.
“You can’t marry him,” said Deena.
“What?” Anna squeaked as she sat on a sofa across from her.
“He’s a…a fake… and…and… you’re about to make the biggest mistake of your life!”
“What on earth are you talking about?”
“Anna, he’s the type that thinks he can buy anyone or anything…”
“So you think he bought me?” Anna asked incredulously.
“Of course not!” snapped Deena. “But…I don’t think you really know him.
I believe he’s pretending to be something that he’s not.”
“But you haven’t spent any time with him. Once you get to know…”
“That he’s not real,” finished Deena.
“And you can say that after only ten minutes in his presence?”
“Hey…it was enough for me to see that he’s…he’s nooot genuine.”
Anna sat there frustrated. She valued her friend’s opinion, but this time…
“He’s not your type, and he’s not a Christian,” Deena said again.
“Danny was the one for you.”
“Danny?” Anna said shaking her head.
Danny was not a Christian, had nothing in common with Anna, and did not appear to be stable, as he kept moving from job to job.
Anna looked at her friend.
“What?” asked Deena.
“Dee, are you for real? What’s going on?”
“What do you mean?”
Anna momentarily closed her eyes, and took a deep breath.
“You’ve become engaged to Matthew and he’s clearly not God’s choice for you!”
Anna’s eyes flew open and she stared at her friend.
“I’ve got to go,” she said rising from the couch, and on the verge of tears.
“What are you going to do?” asked Deena.
“I…I…please Deena…”
“You’re not still planning to marry him?” Deena asked as she jumped up from her chair.
“Dee…what…?” Anna looked at her friend in confusion.
“You can’t marry him Anna. He’s not right for you!” she shouted.
Anna shook her head as if trying to clear cobwebs.
“Dee,” she said tremulously. “I think…I think I… uh…”
“I think you’re the biggest fool if you marry him.”
Anna’s head whipped up on that last remark, and the tears waiting to make their escape started flowing freely.
She ran out of her friend’s house, jumped into her vehicle, and drove away bawling.
Anna stopped outside her pastor’s home.
Minutes later she called his number.
“Hey Alicia, this is Anna, I’m outside.
Can…can I speak to you and Pastor Ben for a bit?”
“Sure honey.”
Half an hour later Pastor Ben and Alicia exchanged a look after Anna described Dee’s reaction.
“What is your heart telling you?” asked Alicia.
“I feel confused.”
“Are you confused about Matthew?” asked Pastor Ben.
“No. Of course not. You two have given us excellent pre-engagement counsel. I know we are in God’s will. I...I… I just don’t…ugh…”
“You don’t understand Dee’s reaction?” asked Alicia.
“Yeah…I mean…it was weird. She was so angry…almost enraged. It…It just makes me wonder…”
“What?” asked Pastor Ben as he and Alicia exchanged another look.
“It’s…it’s almost as if she’s jealous.”
There was silence.
“I…I can’t believe I’ve been so blind all these years.”
“Well…we’ve been praying for you,” said Alicia, “that God would open your eyes, and he has.”
“Wow…” said Anna. “Wow.”
