“I was watching that,” I said.
“Tough,” was his reply.
One year he decided there would be no Christmas anything. I was in junior high (now called middle school). I was the last of four children still at home. My sisters and brother would spend Christmas at their in-laws. It was going to be a lonely holiday for me. My father didn’t care. It got to the point where I seldom asked him anything because his answer was usually a harsh “No!”
I wasn’t a “bad” kid. I wasn’t perfect, but I wasn’t rebellious either. I was a born again Christian. Jesus was very personal to me. But I had a problem relating to God the Father. I didn’t ask Him for anything because I expected Him to say no too. Jesus loved me. I knew that unless He had a good reason to say no, His answer would be yes. I trusted His judgment. I knew Jesus would do what was best. I didn’t have to understand.
It took me a long time to figure out the image I had of God the Father was wrong. God the Father and my earthly dad were as different as day and night. Light was first shed on my incorrect view the day I heard a teaching from the Bible on what it means to have God as my father. However, it was not until I heard a sermon many years later that I realized what God the Father was like. Simply put, if I knew what Jesus is like, then I knew what the Holy Spirit and the Father are like.
Do I want to grieve the Holy Spirit? Do I want to dishonor the Father? Do I want to disappoint Jesus? No. Do I care what the Trinity thinks of me? Yes. I will always be the Father’s child. I will always be a member of the body of Christ. I will always be a vessel of the Holy Spirit. There’s an eternity waiting for me. I will spend it with my Creator.
Now I see God as though looking in a mirror at a dim image. My knowledge of God is not complete right now, but the day will come when I see Him face to face. That’s when I will enjoy having a all-embracing knowledge of God. It will be as complete as is God’s knowledge of me.
(1Cor 13:12 in my own words.)
