My mother, who I love dearly, buys identical clothing for me and Debbie. I get pink, Debbie gets blue. Yuck! I guess she thinks this is some kind of cuteness, but my sister and I are not identical and I don't like the color pink. I like red, or yellow or any other color besides pink!
My twin and I love each other. And as I'm the oldest by 11 minutes, I feel it's my job to protect her. The problem is, though, I'm kind of selfish and I get jealous a lot. She does not. So when I beat her to the swings, or beat her at a game, I feel good at first, but then I feel bad. Sometimes even sad. I don't understand these feelings, but I know what's nice and what's not.
My favorite time with my twin is bedtime. We tickle each other's back to help us go to sleep. (I think she tickles me longer and sometimes I fall asleep before I tickle her back.) Our younger sister also sleeps in the same room. We love to giggle and it must be every night that we get warned from my dad that if we don't go to sleep he's coming in there with the belt. This makes us giggle even more. And if he does, it doesn't hurt – at least not us, but I think him because I can see it on his face. And I know he loves us, because when I wake up in the middle of the night and am afraid, I start crying and call out his name. "Daddy?" "Daddy!" And before I know it, he comes running in our room and asks me what's wrong. I tell him I’m afraid of the monsters in the closet. (I don't tell him I'm afraid of the snakes at the end of our bed and under our bed. I don’t know why. Maybe because he’ll lose patience with me.) Sometimes, I'm thirsty. So he gets me a drink of water and tells me that there are no monsters and that he's right across the hallway so I don't have to be afraid. He tells me to look at my sisters sleeping. They're not afraid. Go back to sleep.
It's going to be fun today. I love summer. I love school too. But I love playing. I'm not sure which I love better. But I get to do both, so I don't have to choose. I just have to figure out what I want to do today. Go to Susie's house? But then my little sister will want to come. I told Mom she’s always tagging along. I just want to go by myself. I try to outsmart her. If I run very fast maybe she will just stay home. I hope so!
I can't believe Debbie and I are teenagers! It's so much fun curling our hair, but we have to sneak makeup in our purses to put on before we get to school. We don’t wear a lot of makeup, but makeup is all the rave!
I can't believe that our parents died – we’re just teenagers. I can't believe we live with other family members we barely know. My little sister is crying because she has to go live on a farm. We live in a city. Don’t cry Cathy, I’ll go to the farm. And so I do.
I can't believe we're all grown up, married and have children. My sisters go to church. They invite me to an Easter service and I go … for them. I become part of God's family.
It’s forty years later. We don’t get to hang out very much even though we live a stone’s throw away. We’re still giggling. We can’t wait to retire so we can play together again, but definitely not with the hula-hoop. Perhaps we'll go to the movies or to garage sales. It doesn't really matter. We just like being together.
