“Now Johnny, you know you shouldn’t be hitting him.”
“But, Ms. Green, he hit me first.”
“I don’t want to hear that Johnny. He is younger than you and you know better.”
“Now go on home, all ya’ll and don’t take all day. I’m calling your momma right now.”
The walk home from Mr. Green’s house usually takes 10 minute, but on that day, the walk took longer than 30 minutes.
My sister Becca said, “Johnny, you better be glad daddy ain’t at home. ‘Cause he don’t go to church and don’t read the Bible. He don’t know that part that says “train up a child in the way he should go. All he knows is “spare the rod, spoil the child.”
By the time we got home, mom was sitting on the porch with the big family Bible in her lap and the “rod of correction” across her shoulder.
“Johnny, Ms. Green called me today. What do you think she wanted?”
“Me and Little Luther was fighting. But momma, he hit me first. That ole nosy Ms. Green didn’t see that.”
“Johnny Brown, that is not nice to say about your elders. Now, you better be quiet, ‘cause you already in trouble.”
“But momma, why you believe her? Just ‘cause she goes to your church don’t mean she always telling the truth.”
“Johnny Brown, what did I say?”
“Yes ma’am.”
“Kids, ya’ll go on in the house and do your chores. Me and Johnny need to have a talk before your daddy gets off work.”
