Intent to play to our hearts content,
When a startling scene stopped us then
We knew not what to feel.
Confusion. . .but wonder prevailed
A staircase winding up the air. . .
To nothing.
No doors to open, no rooms to explore
No chairs to sit on, no table for eating.
But as we stood at the landing staring
Imagined laughter, whines of pain
Were goodbyes frozen in lips of fear?
Insides churned when war bombs fell.
And. . .nothing.
Drove out of the valley in a flourish,
The jeep tires crunched on gravel and
Swiiissssshed. . .on sand?
The mountain gashed red in the hot sun,
Where earth shook its roots
Debris roared down the slope,
Nothing but sorrow at its wake.
Have you seen a desert-like landscape?
Of remnants of life strewn around?
A wooden truck, some plastic toys,
A headless doll to wring your heart?
Alarmed cries must have pierced the sky,
Hands reached out to loved ones, but -
Aching silence. . .nothing.
Still and calm. . .then the wailing wind
Bellowed down the sea, whipped up waves
Two-storeys high; swept up houses, cars,
People. Everything curled and slammed
Boulders, mud, logs, unmoving bodies
In clutches of death. . . voiceless.
Nothing.
In the void – came a still small voice. . .
Have you forgotten the cries of martyrs?
Death not by the onrush anger of Nature
But the evil deeds of man.
There’s nothing, nothing more devastating. . .
Than seeing Him, the One in labored sweat,
Carried the cross in sweltering heat.
Scourged without restraint
Head bled from a crown of thorns,
Pierced … rivulets of blood streamed
The ground spewed red. In Golgotha,
Nailed on the cross; Cried. ‘Father,
into your hands I commit my spirit.’
Nothing remained silent!
The sun turned away in despair
Darkness shrouded the earth;
Foundations trembled - soldiers scrambled;
The temple’s veil rent in two, the priests cowered,
Eyes covered, terrified to see the Holy of Holies,
But their spirit marred by unbelief
Delivered them. . .to nothing.
How lovely to welcome the sunrise
That marked the Resurrection of life
Into the loving arms of God,
Jesus - our Father, Protector, Healer, Giver
‘Who is and who was and who is to come.’
What glorious life awaits us
From nothing to life everlasting.
Rise up Christians far and wide
Sound the bugle’s Gospel call
Claim the prize Jesus’ death had lain
Salvation is here, boldly we go -
Dance on the staircase to heaven
Elders, angels, step in rhythm
As saints march in exultantly.
Arms raise in praise
Knees bow in worship
Blessed be the Name of the Lord!
The Alpha and Omega.
