Oh, how I love to be a tree! Reaching so high. I spread out my branches toward the sky. I love to soak in the warmth of God’s bright sun. The gentle breeze that flows through my leaves and branches exhilarates me!
Oh, wow, I think I’m being cut down. How exciting! Oh, what could my purpose be? Maybe I will become a table for a large family and I will see the children grow. Or maybe I will be a staff and be a big help to the shepherds in the fields, I love to watch the new little lambs run and play. Or perhaps, I will be part of a cart and get to travel to many far away lands! Oh, there are so many exciting possibilities, I can’t wait to see what I become!
I am feeling very different now. They are cutting parts of me off, it hurts but I know I am in the hands of a master carpenter and I will trust his judgement. Ok, now I am still very tall so I’m going to rule out being a table. Oh, what am I, I just can’t tell.
Where have they brought me? There are so many people here. They all look so angry.
Who is that? Who is this man? Why are they making him carry me alone? What is it that I feel, it’s warm and wet, it’s thick and red. It’s this man’s blood. Oh, he has been beaten, he’s so badly bruised and he has cuts all over him. His head is bleeding, he has thorns cutting into his brow. How can he see with the blood dripping into his eyes?
He is so weak, why don’t they help him? What has this man done that they are so angry with him? His touch is so gentle and his eyes are full of compassion, he doesn’t seem to be angry at those taunting him, in fact it’s almost a look of love as he looks at them.
Oh dear, we fell again. Oh thank, you sir for helping him carry me. Sir, do you know where we are going?
This has been a long journey, you can tell where we have been because this man, who has remained silent, has left a trail of blood, his blood, on every inch we traveled. I can’t believe they want us to go up this hill, will he be able to make it!
The soldiers are all gathered around us now. They made this man lie on top of me. What are they doing, I don’t understand! Oh dear, they are using nails, big ones, and nailing this man to me! What has this man done to deserve this? Why isn’t he fighting them? He remains quiet, even though the pain must be excruciating.
Now, they have put us upright and dropped us into a hole, how that must have hurt this man. There are many people gathered around to watch. There are two other trees, one of each side of me, they both have men on them as well. Wait, one man is talking to my man.
“Jesus , remember me when you come into your kingdom.”
“I assure you, today you will be with me in paradise.”
Jesus! This MAN is Jesus! God’s Son! This was God’s purpose for me, to hold His Son! God grew me just for this. How sad God must be to see His Son treated this way!
It is getting dark now, but why, it is the middle of the day and the sun should be high in the sky.
“It is finished” Jesus said just before He bowed His head and died.
They took Him down from me and placed Him in a tomb. When the others beside me died, they took them down as well. And now we stand here casting a long shadow as the sun goes down, it is now that I see what I have been made into, a cross. It is now that I realize my true purpose.
By the way, I over heard some people talking, they said that Jesus did not stay dead. He rose from the dead 3 days later! And I have to say that I believe it! God can do anything!
