The reindeer waved the polaroid, and grinned. “Oh really? What happened?”
“Well, it all started when the loan shark called and that codfish in accounting took the bait. Then the cat threw a hissy-fit and the fur started flying.”
The reindeer tucked the picture in his fanny pack, and pulled the camera to his face. “How can we keep the cat in the bag?”
“Too late! The polar bear caused a bit of a roar when he posted it all over the winternet! They were saying your business is for the birds! That only lasted an hour, till the chickens flew the coop! ”
“Can you get the turtle in front of the press?”
“We tried but we couldn’t get him out of his shell! And the owls were no help, they think it’s all a hoot. ”
“Maybe we can still duck this one,” the reindeer said as he snapped another polaroid.
The gopher’s nose twitched. “Don’t involve the mallard. That old quack will put us down in the water. Besides, the platypus called and we haven’t payed the duckbill.”
“Well what have we done in response to all this?” The reindeer said, pulling a lollipop from his fanny pack.
“The boa extended work hours, but now everyone’s feeling constricted. I don’t know how long he can keep them working; the skunks are already raising a stink.”
“Weren’t we hosting a benefit for the bugs today? That should be good for our image.”
“That was a fiasco! First, the chameleon turned it into a costume party; then the wolf howled for venison, which put the fawn in a bit of a spot.”
The reindeer smiled at the polaroid as he asked, “What about our investors?”
“The beaver toured the lumber mill, so he’s got a lot to chew on. And we made the horses an offer, but all they said was ’Nay!’ They ponied to greener pastures for a finer pinch of hay.”
The reindeer snapped another polaroid and stared over the ocean. “The squirrels could put a positive spin on all the chatter.”
“They already are, and they’re driving everyone nuts! Sir, what are we going to do?”
The reindeer chuckled as he finished fanning a polaroid. “Do you know why I quit flying with Santa Clause?” The reindeer unzipped his fanny pack.
The gopher’s nose twitched and his specs tilted right. “You weren’t the one that ran over grandma, were you?”
“No, that was Dasher; and between you and me, he was hitting the eggnog pretty hard that night. No, it was nothing so exciting as all that. You see, the fame and fortune were nice and all.” The reindeer pulled a stack of polaroids from his fanny pack. “But I lost focus of what was really important.” He tossed the pictures on a bamboo table for the gopher to see.
They were pictures of his family swimming, surfing, building sand-castles and hiking. The gopher squinted at the pictures as he wiped his specs with his hankie. “You quit for your family?”
“Yes. And when I started the forest company, I hired you so that I could enjoy my holidays. I’ll make money, I’ll lose money; it doesn’t matter. But this is a holiday that matters; even more than Christmas. I need them to know they matter to me.” Reindeer rested a hoof on gopher’s shoulder. “You’ll tunnel past it, gopher.”
Gopher set his specs back on his snout. “Yes, sir.”
“Thanks, gopher. Now, I’m going to go parasailing in grass skirt.”
As reindeer walked toward the beach, he heard gopher say, “Mr. Goat! I need you to get on the horn. We’re going to need the whole flock for this one.”
